  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am responsible for managing the team to deliver buisiness standards. As a senior supervisor I am responsible for general running and store KPI measures. I typically run frozen and am responsible for the date checking process in store. I am responsible for staff reviews, performance interventions and investigations. I run the store in my store managers absence.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Before starting my apprenticeship I was already acting as a supervisor so already had the skills, however the apprenticeship program made me more confident in doing my role and I gained new knowledge on retail in general and not just the business I work for. Because Iceland is just one retailer, it opened up my eyes on how just because we do something a certain way, it doesn’t mean it’s the right way for the customer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have now finished the program but I did enjoy spending time with my tutor. I had a bad experience with the program where I had no support from my store manager- my tutor helped me get through this and helped me emotionally. The apprenticeship program opened up many opportunities for me so in that aspect I enjoyed it

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Not as organised as I thought it would be. I often went long periods of time without speaking to my tutor. Because I was already acting as a supervisor a lot of the training got signed off very quickly. The end point assessment results took a long time to be released, over the expected time.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Through my apprenticeship I had 2 different managers. The first manager I received no support. Myself and 2 other members of management at the time were filing a grievance against our manager and my tutor supported me through this as I could talk to her. I didn’t receive any training from my manager, the 3 and a half hours a week we were suppose to have for training he didn’t use for my training. My new store manager was brilliant through the program, allowing me to take time out of my working day to sit and do my apprenticeship

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I started my apprenticeship program in May. Between May and February I saw my tutor twice. Communication wasn’t great during this period and with going through a tough time with my store manager looking back I’m surprise I didn’t quit the program. After speaking to[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] things started to improve and I saw my tutor every 2/3 weeks minimum, and she would email me weekly to see how I was doing.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • If I’m completely honest, I didn’t receive much training at all during my program. The only big benefit is that for my business project I had to go away and research the company I work for (unique selling points, brand standards etc) which helped to expand my knowledge on the company. Also, with my professional discussion I had to collect evidence to show I can deliver the role, which helped me see what I can actually do

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Iceland have reps, know as talking shop reps. This is like having a ‘union’. Every store has 1 representative where they attend meetings to drive positive change within stores. I was talking shop rep for 3 years in my store. Due to this I was able to attend regional and national meetings, attend the best company awards and attend head office and be filmed on the role.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Iceland to shop or work? Iceland to shop- a retailer that cares about the environment and sustainability- doing it right. We have staff that go out of their way to exceed customers needs. We also sell amazing products which are unique that you cannot find elsewhere. Iceland to work- a great workplace to find opportunities for personal growth.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Iceland?
  • Be yourself. Stand out. Don’t be a fixed mindset. Be a growth mindset and want to learn. Iceland are a company that are known for their sustainability. Being an Iceland employee it’s right to support the business with this, and have good knowledge so that we can share it with our customers
