installing new and maintaining current measurement instruments such as temperature, pressure and flow. aswell as xray gauges to measure the zinc coating weight and radiation gauges to measure steel thickness. looking after cctv camera systems, installing new cameras and repairing existing ones. analysing plant data to help fault find and improve quality

I have developed new fault finding skills, in electrical circuits aswell as general plany systems. my electrical knowledge has improved a lot. I have learnt about how many different instruments work, including laser spectroscopy, x-rays and ionising radiation gauges. I have also recieved training in health and safety relating to my work tasks like laser and radiation safety

I have now finished my apprenticeship, and find my current roll interesting, varied, often challenging and rewarding. During the apprenticeship i enjoyed learning about all the different areas of plant and how all of the equipment works together. I am still learning, as new equipment is installed and i will continue to improve my understanding of existing plant.

The apprenticeship was very well organised, with structured college courses for each year, aswell as additional training courses for specific things like fault finding, PLCs and motor installation. the plant training was also well organised with a set rotation to ensure i got experience in all the different areas and with regular reviews to monitor progress.

my employer provided as much support as was needed. there was a full time apprentice coordinator that we could contact at any time with any issues we may have had. also all of the engineers on plant were helpfull and would offer advice on any issues we may have had.

My training provider gave all of the support that i needed when i was working towards my qualifications. when working towards my HNC we were in college 1 day a week with a number of different subject tutors, all of whom were happy to help if i was experiencing any difficulties.

i believe that my HNC and other qualifications help my perform better in my roll by helping me to understand how the different plant equipment operatres and interacts with each other. aswell as with things like tuning PID loops and understanding what each value means and what affect it will have.

I am not currently aware of any extra-curricular activities to get involved in at work, There is a company newspaper that sometimes mentions races that other employees have participated in but I have not looked into how to join in with any of that due to the time constraints of 2 young children.

I have enjoyed my apprenticeship at Tata Steel, and now am in a job roll that I consider interesting, varied and rewarding. there is the opertunity to continue to higher levels of education that tata steel can help support apprentices and employees through, and many training courses to give a very broad range of knowledge.

I would advise someone applying to a tata steel engineering apprenticeship to try to get a bit of an understanding about what the company does, and to have a hobby that can be related to engineering so that you can demonstrate a basic understanding of the area they are applying for.
