General care and safety of the children, making sure they are always well looked after and cared for. Organising activities, and planning for the week. General upkeep of the cleanliness of the room. Supervising meal and sleep times. Being a key worker to multiple children, and watching and documenting there development.
I learned lots of skills, and working there helped lots with my course. I learned about how children learn and develop, and each step children take to ensure they are developing to the norms and realising when they are not. I also learned first aid skills, and general food hygiene. Along with safeguarding.
I did enjoy my programme but felt as if There wasn’t a good work to study ratio, as I worked long hours and struggled to fit in revision and course work. I enjoyed working within a nursery setting and learning about the children and gaining knowledge. I did feel as though a different setting in the same role would have suited me better.
It wasn’t very well organised, I felt I needed more time with a tutor and more time for coursework as I worked long hours. Fellow people on my course believed the same. The staff in my setting had to work more hours than those in other settings, so we struggled to fit everything in. But for the course length time it was worth it in the long run.
We did receive support from the employer to an extent, they were always stated if we had any questions about our course to go to them for advice. But did feel that the employer was generally to busy to have time for the apprentices, and wasn’t often around. The employer would regularly disregard our tutor when asking for more time in class with other students.
I felt my training provider was brilliant, gave lots of support, and I felt I learned a lot. They were always supportive when needing extra help in work or with coursework. There were regular emails when help was needed, and we were always made to feel like it was available. They were even supportive with home life, and would take us out of class if we needed a private chat.
I understand so much more about the children and the role itself. It makes things much clearer, and more understandable. I can always referee back to things I learned with my training provider to help me in situations in the work place. I fee I am confident in my knowledge to provide good care.
There are no extra curricular activities as such, we did Morning club before the nursery opened to provide for the children who’s parents start work early, which I was apart off, And sometimes fundraising events for charities, (summer fairs, Christmas jumper day) where the staff and children get involved.
No
I would not reccoment this company, my pay was wrong regularly, or paid on the wrong date making people short until the problem was sorted. Staff weren’t respected. But the job itself is very rewarding. I fee like apprentices in this setting would be better off going elsewhere, where they could get more help and time do to there course. My hours were long, and I didn’t have much of s life outside work, training and course work. And I don’t think the setting understood this.
Apply with caution, you will be working long hard hours, with no sympathy of your course. You will have the same hours and responsibilities as every other staff member and this includes taking work home. You will learn plenty, but I would certainly try other placements before applying here. Somewhere you can get the support you need!
