  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • We had different seminars or group tasks in the mornings and we were given tasks by our supervisors in the afternoons. We swapped supervisors halfway through the week so we could have experience in more than one department. On the last day we took part in a mock employment tribunal which we had an introductory seminar for earlier in the week.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • I learnt research skills from various research tasks given by my supervisors. I learnt presentation skills from presenting my reasearch to another work experience student and two of our supervisors. I learnt how to develop my CV from the advice and help given by my supervisor on the last day.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I enjoyed it very much, especially the seminars as we were given good advice about applying to university, choosing a course and where to study. The mock employment tribunal was also very enjoyable as we were given a chance to act out a case. We were also given a chance to visit and look around court which was very enjoyable as well.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • It was very well organised as we were given a pack of information when we arrived which included a guide to the work experience, a timetable for the week, safety procedures and a seat plan for the departments we were going to sit in at. On the first day we were also given a £5 co-op gift voucher so we could have a free lunch on the first day.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • We learnt a lot about the company culture of Pinsent Masons through the various seminars that we were given. We learnt a lot about the different departments, the process that the trainees went through and the diversity and inclusion policies of the firm. When I was with my supervisor I was also given a chance to do independent research on the firm.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • It helped me a lot so we were able to go to different departments so we had an idea of the different options that we have when working as a commercial solicitor. The seminars also helped to give us information on the different options that we had whether it was within the law firm or something outside like advocacy.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • No, we were only given a £5 gift voucher to buy lunch on the first day as we were told that lunch was provided but there was no canteen facility in the building. We paid for our own transport to and from the firm and for our lunch on all the other days.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • Yes as we met many employees and traineees who gave our senimars and delivered our business task so we had a chance to talk to a lot of different people. We also had a lot of time to work individually with our supervisors in the afternoons so we were able get advice from them.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It was a very worthwhile experience as we were given a wide variety of things to do such as business tasks, visiting court, listening to senimars and working with our supervisors. We were also given plenty of time to ask questions and we were given great advice for applying to university by people who have already been through the university process.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons?
  • I would say to write about all your previous work experience as well as your hobbies as it shows that you do other things outside of academia. I would also say to write about what skills you have gained from previous work experience and extra curricular activities as it shows that you have learned a lot and are willing to learn more.
