Had the opportunity to shadow trainee solicitors in a different departments, carrying out research tasks and helping to draft basic legal documents, as well as having a presentation on different aspects of commercial law each day.
Developed IT, communication and research skills, as well as having the opportunity to learn a lot about the everyday tasks of solicitors. It was a very valuable opportunity for anyone considering commercial law as a career, its value lies less in the skills developed, than in the insight gained into the work commercial firms and solicitors do.
Very enjoyable, interesting, informative. I learnt a lot about commercial law, and this made the programme fun, and encouraged me to apply to study law at university.
All the staff were so welcoming and went out of their way to help, and I was thanked profusely for any work I did or helped with, making me feel very valued at all times.
It was very structured in the morning with an hour long presentation on a different aspect of commercial law. However, the rest of the day varied greatly, with some days and departments leaving me more to my own devices to work on a number of general tasks, and others giving me very specific tasks and deadlines. Each work experience student is mentored by a different trainee each day, so if there were any problems, there was always someone around to help.
The trainees provided so much help and very always very welcoming, explaining about their current seat and the role of their department within the organisation as a whole. They also were always the first point of contact for work and if there were any problems and always tried to help as much as they could and solve any problems that arose.
The HR team emailed us all every day to ask about any problems as well as providing some starting points for each department. They also gave us training on the first day to show us the basics of what would be expected of us during the week, which was very useful. Overall, everyone was very supportive and helpful.
N/A as the position is unpaid
There are opportunities to socialise with the trainees outside work, and Pinsent Masons does run a volunteering programme, sports teams and company activites.
Yes
The week gave me real experience of work in a multi-national commercial firm, it was such a valuable experience for anyone looking to study law, and was so interesting, varied and enjoyable.
Take time to fill out the application form as it is very detailed and of a similar nature to those for more permanent positions. Also, do some research about the company beforehand.
