  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I would sit in on calls about a variety of topics relating to tax, such as residence, domicile and property. I had different assessments that we had to complete, the most difficult being an interview with a partner. I dealt with different paperwork, mainly bank statements. In any spare time, I would watch virtual learning tutorials or read notes on tax.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I developed teamwork and communication skills while working with other members of the tax service line. My teamwork skills were strong as I worked well with the people around me. Networking was a skill that I learnt this week - at first, I thought it would be a challenge to interact with new people but I felt that this skill developed as the week went on. While working on different cases, I needed to analyse carefully and find solutions, so I think this helped to develop my problem-solving skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I think the programme was a fantastic opportunity to learn from a very reputable firm. It gave me the perfect platform to apply and develop my knowledge and skills. I also believe that I was supported well by my team when needed, which helped me to enjoy the programme even more, while it also helped to create a strong network.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was very organised but it was also flexible. Before I arrived, I had certain tasks set for us at specific times but the rest of the work was based on what the other members of the team were doing. This meant that I got the chance to work with different members of the team on a variety of tasks, which helped me to learn even more.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer helped me out whenever I asked for it, which meant that I got sufficient support throughout the week - this meant that the tasks were made easier for me. However, certain tasks required independence and hence they told us that we needed to figure some things out ourselves. For instance, I did a practice run of the 'Your Point of View' exercise, but I did not get advice.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • This programme was basically a fast-track opportunity onto the business apprenticeship, so we were being tested at all times. We received support when it was necessary, which definitely helped when working towards the target.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • N/A

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We got the opportunity to go out for lunch at Pizza Express with a couple of members of the team. This gave us a chance to get to know the team a bit better. There was also a fundraising event on the last day, which included a raffle and cake sales.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Working here this week has made me want to work here in the future, and I believe that it is a great place to learn. The people are very friendly and accommodating, while the working environment is very relaxed. The work is also very flexible which would appeal to most people.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • I think that people should be prepared to work quite hard, but they should be ready to learn as well because learning is a huge part of this week, even if you are not planning on going onto do the apprenticeship. During the week, there is an interview, so I believe that they should definitely prepare a bit for that by researching around the topic which they have to discuss.
