  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am working as a civil engineer apprentice in the railways division My days are varied and i am working on multiple projects like Northern Line Extension and Waterloo station I get to go out on site to learn about all aspects of engineering such as geotechnical analysis and soil mechanics i also get to work on some underground stations but mostly i do design work

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new computer aided design skills, and i have developed my calculations I have learn time keeping and multi tasking as i have to juggle work and study Its been a big jump from school because i have to learn how to behave in a professional environment

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying my first year, in the beginning it was lots of introductions and what we will be learning but now i have started to get stuck in and i am really enjoying it, and i think i will enjoy it more as the years progress I am enjoying learning the theory and then going back to the office and seeing that theoretical knowledge put into practise

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I attend university one day a week, so it is a long and busy day! i try to get myself organised as much as possible and ensure i use this day wisely to complete all tasks related to my course There is plenty of support at the university to allow me to do this

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have lots of support from Mott MacDonald. I have a line manager, a mentor, and we have a dedicated learning and development team. Railways has its own training manager so i have her support too. |I also have my buddy and surrounding colleagues who are very supportive and there to help at all times

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have only just completed my first year so i am unsure of what type of support will be on hand, but so far they have been very helpful when i need to gather all my supporting documents and evidence From speaking to other colleagues i think they will be very supportive

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As a civil engineer, my qualification is very important to the role, as will becoming a chartered engineer which is my eventual goal. I will be unable to become a proper civil engineer without my qualification I wanted to do an apprenticeship so i could do the theory and the practical at the same time

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been signed up as a student member of the Institute of Civil Engineers. There is a sports and social team at the office where we get cheap theatre tickets, days out and there are football teams etc to join My team is very sociable and Railways has there own annual ball

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I am really happy here and i really like my team, i have settled in well and i genuinely enjoy coming to work where i am treated as an adult and i feel like i am contributing to proper work its exciting to work on projects that people know about


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • Do your research and find out which Mott MacDonald projects really interest you do a cover letter and put some of your research in there take your time with the online testing, don't race through it don't say one word answers in your interview, the interviewers want to get to know you
