  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day-to-day role incorporates the use of Tekla structures software, this is a form of CAD (computer aided design). At the minute I have been in work 4 days a week, and in college 1 day per week- during this is day I am carrying out work to obtain my technical certificate in civil engineering at BTEC level 3. At work I detail/ design structures by adding connections such as bolts and base plates- these need to be tailored to the job. I am only doing this for my first year as after that I will progress onto live jobs and do more complex work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In the first 6 months of my apprenticeship I learnt different aspects of fabrication and welding. This involved plate work, welding, and oxyfuel cutting. After this we did a course based on autoCAD, this took a few weeks to complete and we were taught this from scratch. At work we have been taught how to use Tekla structures from scratch. We have been taught the principles of steel structures. In college I have learnt aspects of health and safety, sustainable construction, mathematics, surveying, science and materials and lastly construction technology and design.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the apprenticeship programme that I am currently enrolled on. All of the tutors and people in work are so friendly and make me feel comfortable. The learning aspect is really relevant to the job specification and I really enjoy learning new skills and perfecting old ones. I feel really lucky to be part of this programme.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The training provider (Alliance learning) is very structured and organised, in conjunction with work (William hare) I have meetings every 6 weeks to review on my progress. Wigan and leigh college was the only part which I found was not as structured or organised. However, overall I feel that the organisation is good.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a good amount of support and encouragement from my employer. I am constantly being pushed to meet my potential. And If I have any worries or qualms I know who to go to, as there are many people in the office whom I could talk to. I feel really secure and supported in the workplace.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have a review conducted by my training provider every 6 weeks to talk about my goals and the achievements that I have come out with. They are funding my BTEC course, so any problems that I have had they have been dealt with via alliance learning- which I think has gone reasonably well.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that completing my technical certifate will allow me to understand the background of engineering that I am in, and help me to have a good all rounded knowledge of the industry and what processes are involved in a job- it will also help me to understand any other job roles for the future as it will aid my interpersonal skills and will also make me diverse if I wished to change job role.

  • 9a. Would you recommend William Hare to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Personally, I feel that this company is a really good opportunity for young people as you get opportunities that others would not get, and any training or qualifications that you need will be provided to you by either the company or a training provider- without getting into student debt. There are many company perks and a great salary for a young person.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to William Hare?
  • Ensure that you are very well-prepared and have a well thought out interview. Think outside the box. You should be well dressed and well spoken to give a good impression. More importantly, be yourself- you should show your true character. Ensure you have a goo record of achievements and this should also be in order, to show that you are organised.
