  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day consists of inspecting trains and ensuring they are safe and up to standard to go out on the railways this includes general servicing and checks on trains and checking gearbox oil levels as well as brake pads and filters. We also check the couplers and suspension

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a good amount since being with bombardier and I have gained good experience on the shop floor working with my team I find that I am more better at paying attention to detail than I used to be and I have a good way of changing the filters easily

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is a good laugh because I work with a good bunch of people. I have gained good experience and have got better at my job. I also feel that it is a good and safe place to work and ntar provide a good course for me to take

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is structured well for an apprenticeship of this sort, I get a good amount of time to learn my trade and I get given good lessons on what is needed for my job role. I feel that the block release when I am sent to ntar is good as well

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer are supportive, I feel like the people I work with can sometimes be a little bit old fashioned with the way they work and they do give the apprentices a fair amount of tedious jobs to do I also feel that it is interesting and I learn from other team members

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Ntar provide a good and fair bit of support. Every 3 months I have a review to check how I am getting on and I get to have someone in charge go through my file to monitor my progress. I also get fun days out within the onboarding stage which I really enjoyed

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I learn what is as I call the general basics of the trains and learn things such as how to fix doors and I feel it makes me more comfortable doing my job on real trains. I feel like at the training school the equipment is very good and up to standard

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • With the people I work with there has been a few occasions where we have got together to go for food and it’s been enjoyable we all have a bit of friendly banter and a laugh and it is good for our work and home life balance i believe

  • 9a. Would you recommend Bombardier to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company has good plans for the future and a lot of good things are lined up for the apprentices! I feel that the company care about the new generation and they want to exploit this in the work place. They love the idea of new technology and the way the young people Have been brought up with it


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bombardier?
  • When applying to bombardier it’s important to recognise that it is such a major game player in the rail industry. You should take pride in that and remember to do your background research before going to an interview. Let the employers know you want to bring something to the table
