  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Every day is usually different but yet very exciting from assisting engineers in the field on the railway to studying in a high tech training centre where I learn how to maintain track equipment to a high standard whilst working safely under pressure in an environment that is based outside

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I’m always learning new skills and get tips from others on how to to things easier and more efficient. I get to learn new things and gain my experience. The main skills I have learnt how to visually inspect things correctly and use tools in an efficient but safe way

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is fun and exciting for me I find it challenging and it keeps me busy whilst entertained. I enjoy solving problems and working with a team so the job is suited well to my needs. I feel like the training centre is really cool also as we stay there for 5 months

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Lessons are structured well with good objectives set at the start of each one. I feel that teachers really know their stuff and give a clear way of teaching to make sure everyone understands. There is also a good rate of work to what we get done in short periods of time

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer put their trust into me and have invested a lot of money into my learning and development. I feel like they have put my education first and real support me with making the right decisions and deciding on my future objectives and goals. I also have help whenever needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I get a good amount of support and it is nice that my company give me so much trust and help me with my qualifications. The training centre really gives me a lot of hands on experience as well as field based knowledge and even though itnis intense it is enjoyable

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I get to learn about what is needed in my job and how to work safely and efficiently. I think that the training centre gives me a good understanding on common problems that I can expect to come across. I also think that my skills are better after doing the training

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a few different networking events that take place around the company to ensure everyone gets to know each other. Also At the training school there are always a lot of different social events such as football and other fitness clubs that keep you active and involved with teams.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • network rail is one of the largest organisations in the uk that offers a great range of different job opportunities and options. I get enjoyment from working there and I have learnt so much within my time being here. I get on with every one and I like to be able to change scenarios at work with different jobs


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • I would suggest not stressing or worrying about not having any previous experience as the company like to train everyone to their standard. Also they look for people who work well with others and are not too bossy or don’t give enough input: they also like to know you are sensible and safe
