  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • I carried out work experience at a Tesco Store. My job title was store assistant. I carried out daily task such as stocking shelves with store items, interacting with customers, and assisting in making sure the shop floor was kept tidy. I would reshuffle items throughout the day depending on store needs.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • I learnt new skills and improved on others. I learnt how to use my time for maximum productivity. I was required to complete tasks within time limits in a regular basis. I was given thorough training on how to use shop machines and equipment. I have also improved my communication skills when dealing with customers. This job also helped me to improve my basic mathematical skills.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I generally enjoyed my role as store assistant at Tesco.The staff at the store were kind and helpful which made me feel more relaxed. We would work as a team to solve problems and complete various task. I very much enjoyed this aspect of the job. I also enjoyed the different challenges I would face when carrying out my tasks.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • It was very well organised as I was provided with constant training throughout the experience. For each task or role,the managers made sure I was fully trained. I was given full information on what task I would be required to carry out and exactly when I would recieve training. I took part in staff meetings in which I was able to find out any information I needed.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • I learnt a fair amount about Tesco, how they help local communities as well as charities and schools. I also learnt what opportunities they have for younger people such as myself and various career paths you can take with the company. I feel as though i came out with more knowledge about Tesco and their business compared to when i started.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • The work experience helped me quite a lot in deciding whether retail and business was a good career path for me. Although i don't ever believe i will be 100% within my working environment i know that there are certain hobbies/strengths of mine which work better with certain types of businesses.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • Yes i was paid £150 a week for this position. I met with the local manager of the store a couple of times and she also told me about other opportunities they have for me such as training, part-time job etc. I was happy to receive the money i was paid as at the moment i am mainly looking for experience.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • I was regularly invited by staff members to take part in various activities and events on my days off. The activities included team paintballing, bowling and visits to theme parks. The staff would also socialise in local restaurants after work. My work experience was only for a short period so I only able to do take part in a few activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tesco to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would strongly recommend Co-op because they provide great support to their staff. The working atmosphere is good. The job also provides many enjoyable challenges and ways to improve your skills. I think that overall, their core values are really good and i was very well looked after by every member of staff who helped with my training and job role.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • Always ask questions and request help if you require it. Have a good attitude towards staff and customers. This will result in a smoother, less stressful experience. Also, be confident and make good first impressions. I think it is always good to keep some notes and/or a diary of how the work is going and your own personal opinions on the work carried out.
