I was a work experience student for a week during which time I was involved in four different departments: corporate, tax, litigation and property. I was allocated a trainee solicitor in each department who would supervise me throughout the day and was given research tasks, drafted letters, sorted documents and wrote article/case summaries.
I've learnt a lot more about the job of a solicitor and the specific areas they can specialise in. The placement also gave a me the chance to experience an office environment and build on communication skills.
The work was varied and interesting and the teams I worked within were all very friendly and helpful. The placement as a whole was just as good as I expected it to be and office atmosphere was very welcoming.
The trainees were all very appreciative of the work I did and gave really positive and useful feedback. I felt really involved in the work they were doing and that my contribution was valued.
The induction and talks we were given throughout the week were informative and insightful and I enjoyed meeting several of the trainee solicitors. The programme was well-structured and the rotation between different departments was smooth and gave a really broad experience. One aspect which I would have liked to experienced more of was the group activities on the afternoon of the first day. These were interesting problems to solve and gave the group of us an opportunity to get to know each other - it would have been really good if we had had more of these challenges relating to different aspects of law.
All members of the departments I was in were approachable and always there to talk to and offer support. I was always given guidance regarding the problems I was given and enjoyed the whole experience.

It gave me a real insight into the job of a solicitor and allowed me to experience a whole range of legal situations.
Don't be afriad to ask questions and just generally enjoy the experience!
