  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have greatly developed in my confidence, interpersonal skills and people management through taking on floor management roles. I have also gained technical skills in a number of areas. This includes, computer networking, coding, camera configuration and operation, signal routing, satellite configuration, risk assessments, sound routing, and sound desk configuration and operation.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I greatly enjoy the work side of my apprenticeship. The academic side has been a great challenge to me personally and to the group as a whole. I found it hard to find links between the academic learning and my day to day role. It was hard to juggle time between professional work and academic work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Again, the professional or work side of the apprenticeship has been very well organised and structure with close involvement from my line manager to tailor the placements to my skills and areas of development. The college or academic side, was very poorly organised with a lack of structure and a distinct lack of communication.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From my employer, whilst at work I receive a fantastic amount of support. This comes from the management team and my fellow colleagues. The support offered is face to face as well as sign posting to relevant support. Whilst at college, support was quite lacking and I often felt left on my own.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provided I completed the academic side of my apprenticeship with was very poor in terms of support. Support for students with learning disabilities and other issues that required support were not given that even after asking many times. Communication was incredibly poor, often feeling like we had to teach and look after ourselves.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification I received through this apprenticeship is quite far away from the job I do day to day. The areas I have covered academically do not really map across to my job so do not provide me the ability to perform better in my role. In a wide context, it's good knowledge to have.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activities to get involved with at my place of work. There are often posters and emails sent around of things that might be of interest. I have seen adverts for activities such as yoga, ukulele lessons, running club, language lessons, LGBT get togethers and many more.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The BBC is a very supportive environment in which to train and grow. They offer fantastic opportunities and are open to young people with new ideas. Where the work is challenging and requires a lot of hard work and possibly independent training, it is very rewarding and has helped me grow as a person.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Be prepared to take on different roles than you had originally envisioned. Whilst you have to opportunity, experience as many job roles as you can as you may just find an affinity for something you didn't know you like or were talented at. Be open to new experiences and be ready to work hard.
