Apprentice Review

My days consist of learning and progressing through my apprenticeship making sure I learn the relevant skills to being a technical for signalling. I carry out maintenance tasks and servicing tasks along side another engineer who is trained. Also being on call to attend and see to faults or emergencies

I have gained knowledge and worked on my previous skill sets. For example working well with others has got better and also my mechanical knowledge and electrical understanding. I have also learnt how to fault find and work on things when there are problems that need to be sorted in deadlines

I enjoy my programme and I like the opportunities that lay ahead for the future. I also like how I’m constantly learning and progressing my skills. Other than skills I have also made good friendships with people and I enjoy the challenges that I face on a day to day

It is a well structured scheme with the whole of the 3 years planned out in advance. We also get put in digs where it means we can focus fully on college work and get the majority of the big chunk of work done within a few months rather than a year

The employer are always around or available over the phone or email to offer support and provide help or deal with any queries I might have. I also feel like there’s a lot of motivation given by the employer to make sure I do well and do things safely

I had a lot of support when learning my nvq and working on my log book. My work was structured well and set with a lot of time to ensure I met the deadlines. I also feel like the training provider give me a lot of advise and time when asking questions

My roles are specific to what I have learnt and learn with my qualification. I also develop a better understanding which makes my job easier to understand and I can understand technical talk that my colleagues talk with meaning that I can keep up with the learning when they’re talking about things

As the company has so many employees there’s a wide range of different activities to take part in with different people but it generally is more down to what you prefer and what friends you make with in the company. It is good and fun when we get together away from work

The employer is a good employer and they offer a lot of benefits as well as a good option to learning and earning at the same time. I feel like everyone gets on and we all work hard for one another to make sure we complete tasks. It’s also fun

I would recommend being sensible and switched on when applying. Make sure you practice for tests and be confident when working with others but don’t come across bossy. It’s also good to accept that you may not have a lot of knowledge but understand you can learn and progress
