  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an apprentice is to shadow and assist qualified and competent engineers and learn their role so that I can do the same when I’m qualified. I also go to college some days and learn the relevant qualifications which included 3 courses in the first year and the second part of one course in the second year

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I’ve developed a few skills. This has included how to use some hand tools and learn how to do skills such as filing and machining. I also feel like I’ve developed my social skills and find it easier to ask for help and work well with others when I need to

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is ok I do enjoy it as much as I would enjoy work. I like having the work experience and hands on experience at the same time as learning although I’m not really that academic I do struggle with some of the lessons but I do get support

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is structured and it has a good flow to it. My lessons never over run and I have fitted all the criteria in that I’ve needed to over the past year. I feel that even though college isn’t the best they’ve done well to get me to pass

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer and get called in for regular reviews in the office to check on my progression throughout the week. I don’t really feel that my employer could be any more supportive and they always try their best or offer me help

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider offer support and help they give me extra support in lessons which help me stay focused and help me understand college work. Some of it can be difficult but they do well breaking it down and helping me achieve well. Some of the support is really useful

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My training provider have provided me with gaining skills such as soldering which has helped in my work place when working towards extra qualifications. I also feel that my other skills help me work better at work and give me a better understanding about the rest of the work place

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I’m at college most of the time so don’t really get involved In any professional networking or any social activities or sport or even extra curricular activities. I hope they do have some for when I’m at work full time as it is enjoyable having a something to do outside of work

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend because the company have offered me a great deal with the apprenticeship scheme. I learn a lot and get paid well to go to college which a lot of people my age don’t always get to do. I enjoy my job and it will be good money when I qualify


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK) Ltd?
  • In order to do well when applying I would gain work experience before hand and show to them that you have a keen interest in the company and engineering this will show you are motivated and enjoy the job and it’s not just for the money. Also put forward a good cv
