  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a I am an apprentice my roles are limited and I am not trained to do a lot in the workshop as such. However I attend college 3 days a week where I study mechanical, electrical and Btec engineering. The days involve a mix of practical and theory lessons

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • ever since I started my apprenticeship I’ve developed my skills and knowledge. My main skills I’ve learnt have included bench fitting skills and being able to file precisely as well as drilling and milling. My main skills I’ve developed also include using tools such as ohm-metres in electrical

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is enjoyable as I learn about various different things and they are also relevant to my job role. I get given plenty of time to complete my assignments and I enjoy the challenge with exciting assessments such as learning how to remove a car scratch on a car

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme could be more structured with the likes of teachers being more organised however in the first year I’ve completed most of my assignments with 4 weeks to spare at the end of the year. My whole experience has gone well and I’ve achieved what I’ve needed to

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employers are very supportive and give me extra work to do along the way in order to gain my qualifications as I go. They hold reviews and help me out if I’m stuck with anything. Managers also offer me their phone numbers to call them if I’m ever stuck

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When I’m at work I get given regular training and I also get support with my qualification. My training provider offer me extra support and also set targets for me and track my progress. I feel that the staff in my workplace aren’t always helpful as they can sometimes be busy themselves

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My training provider make the connection between college and work a little bit easier and a little bit more organised. They bridge the gap and it helps me perform better as I know what I need to do in order to pass each unit and there is more of a structure for me

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Outside of work we like to play golf and it’s fun. Everyone enjoys the friendly competition and it is a way to make friends with people I work with. It’s always better when getting on with others from work outside of work also as it makes the experience better

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would always recommend the company I work for because if I didn’t think they were good I wouldn’t invest my future with them. They offer a lot of opportunities for the future and are a well connected company with a lot of options to progress on offer


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK) Ltd?
  • Always keep a structured cv and Be polite. Also remember if the company invite you for an interview they already like you so just be organised and be confident. It’s also good practice to research if there and any assessment centre tests as well as any questions they’re likely to ask you
