  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work as an automation consultant providing test automation solutions. On a day to day basis I will review testing requirements, the systems the tests interact with and the technicalities behind each of them. I then look at adding additional functionality to our automation frameworks to meet the testing requirements.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As part of my role I have had to learn a multitude of new skills, the first and most beneficial to my career was the Java programming language. As my responsibilities have grown I have had to expand my technical knowledge further and learn SQL, C#, Maven, Git, Bitbucket and numerous others.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • This is a double edged sword. I absolutely love my job and the fast paced development and growth of responsibility. The degree, Digital and Technology Solutions is obviously very beneficial to me, but I did not expect how hard it would actually be to perform to your best at work, while still trying to do well in the degree. Sometimes it feels like you can only choose one.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think from an employer perspective it is well organised and structured. However from experience with the university, it is not quite the same. It often feels like the university modules are a bit random, and sometimes irrelevant, and the communication of information, grades etc. can be quite poor. Some modules are amazing, you have all the information you need, others....have barely anything.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From the people I have spoke with this definitely varies per business unit or area. My personal experience is great, my business unit are very accommodating and understanding when it comes to the demands of our university studies. I never have trouble booking study leave or getting the time I require to complete my studies.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again, this varies entirely per module. Some of the module tutors are brilliant, very fast replies to emails, always happy to help and provide really good study information on our virtual learning environment. On others, it's the complete opposite, when they don't put the effort into the training, it's hard to put the effort into the learning.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Again this is a double edged sword, I would not be in the position I am today without the initial training I received on the Java programming language, this has opened up a number of avenues for me. There have been a lot of beneficial modules, but there has also been a fair few where I, and others, have thought "How is this going to help me at work?"

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Capgemini are brilliant for this, there is always opportunities to get involved in different events should you wish, whether that is social activities, competing in boat races, or helping out at assessment centres, doing talks in local schools or competing in technical challenges with apprentices from other businesses. We really excel here
