  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As part of my apprenticeship, I rotate around the various different business departments every 3 months, so my day to day tasks can vary. In the Operational Excellence department, my day to day roles usually involved data analysis, creating presentations, sitting in on project meetings to gain knowledge of key issues, and assisting with the progression of projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Main skill which has been developed is communication. Liaising with a high number of colleagues on a daily basis quickly grows confidence and ability to transfer key information effectively. Other skills which have grew include competence on programs such as excel and oracle. Carrying out a number of presentations since starting at Cummins has also helped my presenting skills no end.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work I carry out can change on a day to day basis, meaning I am never bored with the tasks I am carrying out. I enjoy the responsibility I am given with tasks and feel I can genuinely contribute to the progress of a project or department as a whole with the work I do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure is generally very good. I will usually spend around 3 months in each department before my next rotation. This gives me plenty of time to grow my knowledge and experience of how a department works and why they carry out the work they do. Working in a range of departments also gives a very clear picture on how the company operates effectively and efficiently.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If support is required, generally it is there when you need it. With daily tasks, managers and colleagues will sit down and go through what is required clearly and in an understandable manner. If further support is required, I am not afraid to ask as everyone is very supportive and wants you to succeed with whatever you are doing.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Since beginning the Business Management degree at Warwickshire college, they have been very supportive and very clear on what is required from us as students in terms of quality of work and what key aspects to include in our assignments. Lecturers are happy to provide more in depth explanations on areas which you may be struggling with for example.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Carrying out the qualification while working along side is a very effective method of applying what I learn to day to day tasks. Many things which I learn during college days are seen in Cummins which helps grow my understanding further of the subject. Overall, working enhances what is learned in the college lectures.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Cummins have their own football team based in the local area which I was involved with for a period which I first joined the company. Being part of the team allowed me to meet people who work for the business that I usually would not interact with or ever meet, which was very refreshing as I feel it is important to get to know about peoples experiences throughout the company rather than just ones in similar roles.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Cummins to a friend due to the support they provide on the job as well as the great atmosphere you are able to work in, with great colleagues who want you to do well. Cummins also has many opportunities for progress within the company, and the apprenticeship program sets you up very well in regards to climbing the ladder and developing further at the company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
  • Be prepared for a tough but fair selection process, and prepare well by researching the business and their values. Also if you feel unconfident or nervous about working at Cummins or going through the interview process, they will support you and make you feel as welcome as possible. Overall, do a solid amount of interview prep and research into the company, and be passionate about the opportunity you have.
