  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Openreach Engineer, my job requires me to carry out a multiple of task. My day to day varies significantly and no two day is the same. One day I can be providing a new line into a customers premises and the next I could be carrying out a repair in a business.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When I first joined the company I had no idea of what I was in for as I have spent more time learning on the job skills as well as classroom training, I've developed a understanding and knowledge which has helped me daily. This job requires constant learning which I am doing and trying to better myself to improve as an engineer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • When I first joined the company I had no idea of what I was in for as I have spent more time learning on the job skills as well as classroom training, I've developed a understanding and knowledge which has helped me daily. The programme is very enjoyable but could do with more training throughout the year for more consistent learning.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course and learning is well organised/structured but could do with the training and on the job learning split. With that the course would be 10/10, it strives to make you a better engineer but the information at the beginning can be a bit of a overload when learning something new.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The company does provide untold support which is very beneficial as a new recruit. It aims to make you and bring you up to be the best engineer as possible in the least amount of time. It can be a very difficult job at times but you have colleagues from your managers, buddy's to coaches on hand to help you.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The amount of support I receive from my training provider is untold, they try to guide us and give us the most amount of information to become competent in our job. If we do have any significant issues or concerns to the work we are doing or the coursework we many struggle with they are at hand to help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification provides a platform for us to springboard far into the company its a build block for us to grow. It has given me a basic knowledge about the company and what more is required with the job and not just the job itself. As well as providing a service for the company it is also my duty to protect it as well.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Thankfully Yes, There are extra-curricular activities that are involved in the job. This is dependent on performance and how the team are overall performing. We have recently been given a opportunity to go paintballing with our colleagues as we have helped the company hit its targets and performance for the year.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BT to a friend as it is literally a job for life and where you go within the company is up to yourself. It gives you a freedom like no other job but also a challenge which makes you use your brain each day. The structure of the company allows progression and its up to you to get there.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be honest and think about what you really want to do, this job isn't a walk in the park and can be very frustrating and challenging at times but that's what also makes it so enjoyable at the same time. There were a few words that was told to us during our training and it is literally quite that simple... "its only a pair of wires"
