  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My current role is all about managing the assets that various companies either own or lease. It is essential that the data we hold on these assets is 100% accurate, as it is used to create invoices for these devices, as well as other managed services. I complete various tasks from updating the information we hold on an asset from an email sent to us, to creating full reports that are then sent to the billing team who create the invoice for the customer.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have definitely learned new skills, as well as expanding on my existing ones. From my previous job, I was very much in a customer-facing role, which helped to boost my confidence when talking to customers directly, as well as making me think that I can take on new challenges, and succeed at them. In my current role, one of the major things I did recently was train someone in India remotely. This increased not only my mentoring skills, but again my confidence as by using my own experience from the role, the person I trained did an excellent job with what I tasked them to do.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Mainly I do enjoy the programme, though I would rather be in a more IT technical role which is what I originally applied for, and is what I am passionate about. My IT Systems BTEC Diploma also has increased my understanding of this area, and so by being within that role I would be able to apply what I have learnt, and apply it to the role. On the other hand, I have a great assessor who is extremely supportive, and I am proud to be working with such as prestigious company.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well organised. In essence, I have 2 main tasks to complete before the end of my apprenticeship. These are my ICT Systems and Principles Diploma (which hopefully I will have completed within a few weeks from now) and my NVQ (which is all coursework-based, where I upload evidence through various modules).

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I would say I receive a lot of support from the company I work for. Firstly, I have my manager who is very easy to talk to and supportive. My manager is also very good at giving advise from their past experience, which will help to guide me down the right career path. I also have 2 site representatives and an apprentice lead who have sorted a lot of my problems for me - I must say that these people are perfect for their role.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I get a lot of support when I go to the training centre to complete my BTEC every few weeks. The lecturers are always on hand to assist if I need help with a certain module, such as Subnetting or AC DC theory. On quite a few occasions, I have stayed behind for 2 hours at the end of the day, where one of the lecturers insured I passed 2 tests (I still have one more to complete where I have to get 100% on it).

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Personally, I feel that most of what I learn through obtaining the qualification is irrelevant. This is because my current role is not as IT-based as I would like for what I get out of the qualification. For example, as part of getting my qualification, I have to build a computer network by using different scenarios using a router, switch and PC/ IP Phone. This is one thing I am passionate about, though sadly it is not something I will do in my current role. On the other hand, further down the line I may be in a role that requires the technical (and non-technical) skills that have gained from the qualification

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a lot of activities to take part in, a lot of which are for raising money for charity. We have a couple of people based at where I work who organise these events, as well as sending the information about these events via email by using a distribution list. One example of an event is a charity football match, where hundreds of pounds are raised each time for various charities, such as for Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As well as being a prestigious company, BT is filled with hundreds of opportunities that will give you a challenge. BT is also very supportive of all it's employees and makes things a lot more streamlined now only in working roles, but also with the services it provides to its employees such as pensions, a rewards system, e-cards (recognition) and making it easy to find specific policies (such as health and safety polices, and security polices).

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would say go with your dreams and ambitions. If you want to be a manager who is responsible for a big part of the business for example, you will be able to achieve this position through the support of other employees and managers, as long as you have a clear focus of what your end goal is for your career. In fact, this was one of the first things I was asked - what is my end goal? It felt strange to be asked this at first when I had just started at the company, however it allows you to understand what you must do in order to reach that end goal.
