  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Where to start with a review on the coop funeralcare??? People will say I started at the bottom of the ladder, but being a funeral service operative was the most rewarding job in the whe world. We would collect families loved ones from the place of death and bing them into our care. We would care and look after them like they was our own family. Every day the management team would would be there for us and help us in every way they could. I would be looking after and driving very expensive cars on a daily basis. After looking after the families loved ones we would place them gently into their chosen coffin and take them to the crematorium. Each step of the way the deceased would be cared for and looked after. After the day of the funeral we would take the cars back wash and polish them ready for the next day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I came to the coop funeralcare after selling shoes in a sports shop. I came to the coop with no qualifications at all. I know have an nvq, every day I am learning and I don't think I will ever stop learning. The thing is about the coop is they will give you all the training you need. I felt I was struggling with certain things at times so the coop gave me extra training and the staff would give up their time to help me

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Learning learning learning. There is and was so much to learn with the coop funeralcare, the train with the nvq people was really good as she helped me every step of the way. She lived 150 miles away but was always available via phone and email. I am still learning on a daily basis

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It was well organised as my manager would give us hours during the week to go to a quiet room with a member of staff so they could teach us in a 121 level. The paper work we needed was always available any time we would need it. Any problems I had I knew the nvq people were just a call away

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Absolutely loads. I was constantly asked if I was OK I was asked if I needed any time to get through my nvq. I have never seen such good support from managers like I have in the coop. You can clearly see that they are your family and not just work colleagues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Personally I'd say the right amount, When I was stuck on a few things she would guide me on where to look for the answers. Not once was it made easy for me I had to do all my own research and get the answers myself. There was one point where I just couldn't find the answer so she directed me to a funeral business page that was 15 pages long and all my answers were in the paragraph there. This made me realise that if you search and read things rather than be told you will remember it in the future

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • 100% I wouldn't be able to give the deceased the care and attention they need without my training. I am now qualified in my role. We have such a hard and challenging job. If I didn't have the training that I did I would never be able to do what I do now

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes absolutely loads and loads. Coop funeralcare is really big in community events. At first I thought it was a waste of time but after going to one I love it and now I do as many as I can. It's nice to be out there in the community and show the public who we are and what we do as a business. People come up to me and say oh your ceri from coop funeralcare, that itself is rewarding knowing that i work for a huge company that looks after their staff

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I only started working for the coop funeralcare as my wife works for coop food. They have accommodated her so much over the last 4 years with child care etc. I work for a company that is owned by its members. The staff and managers are an amazing bunch of people, they will always help you in every way possible. The pay is good and the perks are also good. Why would you not want to work for the coop funeralcare?? I am always promoting the coop as the management team have really looked after me. I personally think that the coop looks after their staff really well and go way beyond what other companies do for their staff. I have never ever felt just like a number in the coop

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • Research on the coop. The coop is the best company to work for in the world. If you want to feel valued and want to have a job for life Then look into our background. We have and still do so many things for the community. I'd also say just to be yourself. The coop funeralcare obviously didn't employ me because of my academic skills as I didn't have any. Each person is judged by what they can contribute to the coop
