  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Daily tasks can vary between time consuming and easy. With time consuming tasks you feel a little under pressure when you have other jobs in that time slot to also complete. I work on my own so the only interactions with colleagues is normally over the phone. There is plenty of interaction with End Users though.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have built upon my knowledge in electronics and IT. We had an extensive training program that lasted 4.5 months. After that we have coaching days every 3 to 4 weeks to develop different aspects of our skills. So far we have had HHT coaching days and Quality standards coaching days.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my program somewhere between mid to high. It is a bit daunting when you are sent out on your own after training with only your phone as your main port of call for help. You do get used to it after a while and the jobs seem to get easier as you go along.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprentice program I am in is very well structured. It is all set out and prepared for you, training days are arranged and communicated to you effectively. All the hotels and transport is all sorted for you during your initial training including meals and a timetable to follow for weeks in advance.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support is there if you need it. (and you do) All you have to do is ring round your collegues manager or coaches and they are all willing to help you out when you need it. There is also a coach on demand available for new recruits which is a help desk especially for new starters.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There are specially booked NVQ days which are days they put you down as an absence so you can do your NVQ work with the ESP assessor with out the worry of your normal work getting in the way. Your manager is always willing to help you out with things you need for your NVQ.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think that the qualification will help me allot. It would take along time to learn all the relevant skills if you were only learning on the job and not given the time to learn and go through your NVQ. Also it will com in handy in the future to have an NVQ in telecoms.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are sports events that you can get into. For instance there is a football team and they play collegues from other areas. There is also competions for good ideas, if you are selected you are able to put your ideas into practice and challenge other people with ideas and a kind of Cup.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Openreach give you everything you need to perform your role. They are fair and really want you to complete your learning and become a permanent member of the team. They are very safety conscious and safety is always the top priority I never thought I would feel safe up an 11m pole but you definably do.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • If you are thinking of applying to Openreach then I would say just do it. You will be welcomed into a team that look after each other. The working hours are good and somewhat flexible and there is never two days the same. If you like interacting with customers and going about your day without being overlook 24/7 its the job for you. You need to like the weather all year round though.
