As an acting operations manager my day to day tasks are looking after the team. That could be dealing with welfare issues or problems at home to discipline matters. I also look after my work stream ensuring that the guys have the correct tools and stores they need to carry out the tasks
I have leant loads in my current role, it has been really beneficial to be part of this apprenticeship scheme while getting my first insights in to management as it gave me the theories to cement my knowledge. I have identified areas I wish to develop further as well. I feel in management and leadership you never really stop learning.
I have enjoyed lots of elements, but I have also found it to be very challenging at times. I have enjoyed learning new skills and theories and putting them in to practice. I have struggled with keeping on top of my work stack and keeping up to date with my assignments.
Elements of it have been very well organised, being very diplomatic I would say there are areas identified for improvement. The biggest worry I have is using my new qualification in the workplace by getting a permanent job and not sitting on an acting grade. On the whole I would say it is moderately good.
My employer have been fantastic throughout this program, they identified me as having the right skills to join the program. Gave me time during my working week to complete assignments, gave me support when it was needed. Openreach is truly a brilliant place to work and be trained, the care about me.
My skills coach has been brilliant throughout again, she has always taken the time to listen to my many problems and help me come up with a plan to get back on track. I thought the lessons held in London could have been conducted in a more fun way but otherwise very good.
It has given me the theories and confidence to carry out all the elements of the job that I didn't enjoy or wasn't very good at. It has made me in to a better al round manager, I am really looking forward to having my own team that I can put all I have learnt in to practice
there are loads of extra curricular activities, unfortunately due to family commitments I am only able to participate in the online discussions. I still find this really helpful, if I am a bit unsure how to deal with a situation I can put it up on the board and hear from people who have had similar training to me would respond.
Yes
I am a veteran of Her Majesty's Forces and since leaving the military I have found it very difficult to "fit in" anywhere. Openreach has filled the void the military left, the guys I work with are all great with loads of friendly banter and camaraderie in the break room and a real can do attitude in the field. I truly believe I have found the company I want to retire from,
Be positive and professional at all times, be warned the recruitment process is very hard to get through but if you are successful it is a job for life. Read up on the big bold plan, found online, and try and incorporate our core values of Personal, Simple and Brilliant in to your application. Good Luck
