  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learning the complexity of people management and techniques used to step from team member to management. Learning how to transition and take on more responsibility, ie how to deal with difficult team situations such as absence reviews, performance management strategy and reward and recognition importance and implementation across the team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Mix of theory and practical use. Interesting to learn the behind workings of management technique. It is very difficult to sometimes implement the practical side, as some roles are not set up to enable management demonstration as team is quite specialist and does not suit some more general management style.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Good mix of classroom sessions alongside written work and practical demonstrations. Criticism would include use of new training platform which is difficult to use with little demonstration. However the classroom sessions have been a great source of inspiration and always leaves me feeling driven to increase my management presence when completing these. I feel more interaction like this, perhaps calls would help increase this.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Great support from management who continue to give me opportunity to manage the team and interact on bespoke projects. My future leaders is always seen as an opportunity by my manager and she considers ways that the business can assist with my qualification, via things like interviews, One to ones etc.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Generally good however use of new training system feels shoe-horned in when emails are generally an easier method of communication. Also expectations of participants in terms of whats needed are somewhat not clear at times. However my training coordinator is great to work with and helpful when asked whats required.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Helps the theory side of things, and gives techniques to fall back on should things get difficult. There is a wealth of learning material around what can be done via team member interaction and the pros and cons of reward and recognition systems and when to use these. Overall I feel its an asset that I will build upon.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Overall within my centre there is little in the way of out of office social events etc. There are some sports teams such as football/badminton within the centre however these are not very well advertised as it may be certain individuals who have set this up. Would love to see more.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Openreach is a great place to work right now. We are undergoing a great period of change and although this can be seen as unsettling, there is a feeling of wanting to excel in our own field. There are great pay opportunities and a great benefits package to consider too.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • To work for Openreach especially since the split from BT you should demonstrate a good deal of enthusiasm alongside a drive for technical learning. Whether its for a desk job or a field job, showing that you are competent and driven is always desired. At team level there is great camaraderie!
