I am a Mechatronics maintenance engineer, which consists of me carrying out preventative, scheduled and corrective maintenance through out production shifts and shutdowns in order to keep the line running. This involves working with robots, PLC, mechanical and electrical and other devices to generate the cars that's are needed to go off the production line to the customer.
I have both learnt new skills and developed in pre existing skills. I have learnt how to program and control robots through pendants as well as the control through PLCs which I did not previously know how to do. But I have developed my electrical skills which I had a basic understand of to be able to wire motors and control boards as well as domestic applications
I enjoy the program alot. I enjoy that it is 1 day for 3 years of College work and the rest of the week is practical. I think this approach helps aid the learning in the classroom as you can put it to practice in the work shop. It also makes the work in the classroom on educational days less demanding on both students and teachers as you are not copped up in a room for 5 days which can become a difficult learning environment but the 4 days in the workshop then allow for the skills to be developed at the same pace as the qualification is being gained.
The structure of the program is well designed at NWTC. We know when our college day is and that remains the same every week. We then get a yearly plan which has where we are, what we are doing and how long for in the work shop. If this is changed we are informed and then given the new information as we are required it.
We have a lot of support. We can speak to staff and NWTC but we also have staff in plant in which we can talk to. We have monthly reviews to ensure that everything is going okay and if there is anything we need help with. To ensure that the apprenticeship runs stress free for us.
From Nwtc we recieve the correct amount of support. They give us the information and help we need when we require it but also ask if we need more. They do not hound us all the time regarding assignments and just let us get then done. I think this is a good approach as we all work at different speeds and require help in different ways so by waiting for the student to come to the tutor after the tutor has finished the lesson means that people don't get frustrated and get the assignments in on time
They have given me the skills and qualifications that is required of me in order to carry out my job to the best of my ability. With out the aid of NWTC I would not have the skills to carry out my job to maintain the production line as I do today
I get involved in open days and STEM activities which are given to us on a regular basis.
