  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role as a civil engineer involves using numerous setting out equipment such as the total station, automatic level, pipe laser and rotating laser level. My job is to set out and survey and to ensure I stay ahead of the works on site so operatives are not stood around waiting on site. I help with inductions and daily briefings on site when needed. I keep control of files on site such as the engineering file where I show proof of testing of equipment, excavations, materials etc. I also write out and issue permits when they are needed on site, as well as order in materials and log materials that have come to site. I also help out with logging site diaries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time at JN Bentley, I have been put on many courses to expand my knowledge and to help me be able to understand and help out on site more. Examples of these includes SSSTS training, which enabled me to write out and issue permits, manual handling training, which meant I was able to carry materials around site safely without hurting myself, behavioural discussions training, utility mapping, reinforced concrete training and a levelling and setting out course. Throughout working with JN Bentley I have gained lots of experience on site where I have always worked with a fully qualified experienced engineer to help me understand and learn. I have also had my college tutor help me a lot through my apprenticeship course who was always keen to help. My mentor has been great by helping me learn new skills from the very start.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my programme. I have always received support through JN Bentley and through LSP whenever I have needed it. I have been with the same site managers, engineers and contract managers throughout my time I have worked here and have always made work enjoyable for myself. I have enjoyed meeting new employees who have all been friendly. We have a good connection with our plant and buying team so we can contact them whenever if we have any questions regarding ordering.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When I first started work at Bentleys everyone was very welcoming and friendly when given our induction and we were all introduced to our mentors. My mentor has helped me a lot through my programme and always given support when needed. I have been on many training courses provided from JN Bentley, as stated in previous answers, so I believe the training is very organised and has helped me through my programme by gaining more knowledge. The LSP course has worked well along with the site based work as we are able to learn the information from our tutor and then can put it into practice once back on site. Whenever I have struggled with my course work my tutor has always been happy to sit down and go through work and I could clearly see he wanted us all to do well. I have always been on site with my mentor and he always made sure I was gaining as much experience as possible. I have always felt as though I have been given plenty of work to do and I am always encouraged to do more and learn more.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have always received support from my mentor and anyone else on site that is able to help me. I have never felt that I have been struggling on my own and there has always been someone there to help me. The HR team have always been helpful whenever I have had any questions in the past and they send emails throughout the company on information such as pension schemes, business mileage and holidays. I received a great deal of support when I went through a difficult time from both HR and my mentor to ensure that I was ok and to let me know that they were there if I needed anything.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider tutor was always happy to help. Whenever I struggled with understanding information on a topic, he would always sit down and talk it through with me until I had a clear understanding. My tutor always offered support when needed. I enjoyed learning my course and the environment of it all. The course also helped me make friends within the company from the other apprentices on my course.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification has helped me with my job role on site. The topics that we learnt on the course sat well alongside the work on site. It helped that I learnt the information within our coursework, and we were then able to put this knowledge into practice on site. I feel as though I know more about my job role and the construction industry from completing my qualification.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have social events in the Shifnal Office where there's activities to do at lunch break and after work. There are things such as football tournaments, yoga, fundraising events and small competitions to get involved with at different times of the year. Within the Rolls Royce framework that I work in, we have had meals and works night outs to get to know everyone on the framework more.
