  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day -to-day role includes assisting other paralegals and associates on matters by completing tasks such as billing matters, opening files and drafting documents using the firm's templates. I am also responsible for issuing reports to clients on all of the current matters that we have as a firm, so I have contact with clients.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to manage my time effectively whilst I have been at the firm, as it is essential to be able to balance your workload. My confidence has also developed hugely as I have opportunities to speak to other colleagues in different offices, and also clients. I have also developed my English skills as we have to send many emails out to clients and other solicitors, so you have to ensure that what you're saying makes sense!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme as it provides a realistic insight into what working in a law firm is like, which you would not get exposure to during a full time degree. I am also enjoying the variety of opportunities that I have had previously, and that are upcoming, as the firm has provided a rotation for each apprentice in the firm.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very structured as the firm has worked closely with my training provider to develop a rotation plan for the foreseeable future for each apprentice. This is to ensure that we get the correct exposure to different types of work in the firm. I am confident in knowing the different types of work I will be involved in during my programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. I have monthly 1-2-1 discussions with my manager regarding my workload etc. I also receive lots of training from the development lawyers on topics that we may not understand in our first couple of years. My colleagues are also very supportive and I can ask them any type of question and they are happy to help, as they understand that you are at the start of your career.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a moderate amount of support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications. We are able to contact our apprenticeship manager at anytime and receive a fast response. We are also appointed a skills development coach in the second year of the programme to help with the end point assessments.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have found that completing my qualification has helped me whilst working in the firm as you are able to see first hand how the law is applied to daily tasks such as clauses in a document etc. I think that it has a lot more benefits to just completing a law degree full time as you may study land law in your first year, but not be able to apply this law to your job for another two years.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have a social committee which organise summer parties and Christmas parties. We also have a drinks trolley every month which allows everyone to gather at the end of the week and enjoy some drinks and snacks. There are also opportunities to go out for lunch with new joiners, which is exciting as you get to know others in a more relaxed environment.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The firm is very welcoming and has your best interests at heart. It is also one of the top employers to work for! BCLP also have a strong structure of work for each apprentice that joins the firm, so you know how you are going to develop through your time on the programme.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner?
  • I would advise people to be themselves, and always research the firm before you apply so that you are fully aware of the types of work we take on, and you explain why you would want to work in this area of law. I would also advise that you research the potential training provider so that you can contact them with any questions you may not want to ask in your interview.
