  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My first year is working in retail for TUI. I undertake the role of a travel advisor where I secure bookings, manage bookings and make sure customer’s needs are met. I’m also trained to sell foreign currency and work in the stores bureau. I complete daily shop jobs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills from customer service when face to face with customers. I’ve learnt telephone skills when speaking to customers or colleagues on the phone. I’ve learnt how to read excel spreadsheets with stores targets and mathematical skills when calculating customers’ holiday costs and discounts.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I’m finding it very enjoyable as I get to mix with many different people - I have become friends with everyone in store but also everyone who is completing the degree. I’ve had opportunities to attend different events, such as opening a new store. I am excited to receive my new role for year 2.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I like how I get a new role for each year of my apprenticeship and will have the opportunity to test out different business areas. This has been organised well. It also works well with university and how we go for 1 week at a time and learn everything and then complete assignments.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot. My manager is always there to help and give me the time I need for university work. The company supports development and provides lots of opportunities to develop. The company allows me to spend 20% of my work time completing work towards my apprenticeship which is useful as completing a degree and working full time can be tough.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I can always go into university and arrange time to see my lecturers for help or guidance. They are also happy for me to call them or arrange Skype calls for any help I may need. They always respond to my emails answering questions too. They also give us access to the online library for resources.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps me to put theory into practise so that I understand the business a lot better. Most of my assignment have been linked to the company, meaning that I can relate to real life situations and put my new knowledge into practise. I have used what I’ve learnt at work, for example, when using excel.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not in retail. However, when I move into head office for my next role, I have heard of opportunities, such as joining the choir or knitting club. Also, they arrange a Christmas party for the local OAPs that I can get involved with. They do a lot to give back to the local community.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to TUI UK & Ireland?
  • Be yourself. The company plays to everyone’s strengths when they are themselves and TUI is great for providing a diverse and flexible workplace. Always ask for help from colleagues or managers if you need anything. Most people on the company are more than willing to provide help to anyone that needs it.
