  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to drive daily sales and KPI's through a team of 30+ staff in a busy retail environment as well as ensuring stock loss and stock processing is completed in a timely manor. I perform monthly reviews and role out training within the team to ensure we have a happy work place.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have only just started my apprentice and it has been difficult to ensure I have time to complete the work well but me and my manager are trying to ensure I get the time. I am on my first module and I am enjoying learning about development of a team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy learning things I haven't yet covered. I find having the background info makes it much more easy to perform reviews and difficult conversations. I am enjoying having time out to learn the background of what we do on a day to day basis and using this to complete my work

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme its self is very organised however doing this structured in a busy retail environment is hard. You need the time to sit down and work through the work and take it in however at the moment I can only get an hour here and there which has meant I am falling behind.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer tries to give me the time but the time just isn't available. I work 40 hours a week and travel an hour to and from work so we are trying to find different ways of fitting in the time, however due to staff shortages this is hard at the moment.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My provider texts and phones me often which is good. I know I can always phone him if needed and this is great and he understands that I sometimes struggle as the retail day to day can change at any time and this is what I find most difficult but he is always there if I have a question.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am just starting out but the module I am currently doing is very relevant to my role so I think it will benefit me a lot over the coming months. You can relate the work into so many different ways in your day to day work which is good.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No there are not. We try to organise team outings however this is very hard due to our opening hours. We sometimes go to training days at head office which is good for the staff to get a fresh look at the work they are doing but no there are not any activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mamas and Papas to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I enjoy my job the team are honestly fantastic. It is challenging but every day is different. It keeps you motivated in challenging retail times, and it helps the regional manager is the best I have ever worked with. He is so interested in his staff and there opinions and this makes you want to work better to achieve results for him.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mamas and Papas?
  • Be open minded there is a lot to learn. It is demanding in terms of expectations but the customers and staff make it worth it. You have to be flexible as opening hours are long but sometimes this works well around different schedules. You need to be interested in your job.
