  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The Loss Data Team is a dedicated team within RBS Capital Management, part of Commercial and Private Banking. The Team is responsible for ensuring the complete, accurate and timely capture of all RBS Group customers who trigger a Basel II default. Basel II is the second of the Basel Accords, which are recommendations on banking laws and regulations issued by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. After the 2008 financial crash the Basel II accord was implemented in most major economies. When the Bank then lends to a customers, a capital risk analysis is made to establish how much capital it needs to put aside to safeguard the solvency of the Bank. This capital is non-lendable by the Bank in case the customer defaults and is unable to repay the Bank in full.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Communication, Scheduling, Risk Management, Critical Thinking, Task Management, Time Management. The above skills is just a short list of the ones I need every day to succeed in my job. During the last 12 months I've incredibly improved my Communication skills, I therefore needed to find a way to communicate effectively with the Loss Data Team members, fostering collaboration with chats, emails and discussions to keep people connected. I was used to react and not think, like on an autopilot. Learning to be objective in my analysis helped me facing potential issues and guided my decisions on what was best for the project.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy working with my team - I've met incredible people and made really good friends. The team is great and fun and we are encouraged to manage our work independently which I really enjoy doing. The Bank has a great company culture and I feel encouraged to bring the best of me at work and inspired to do more and better each time.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There has been some confusing at the start of the programme since BPP decided to make me start early. After that though I had clear instructions and regular coaching meetings and reviews. I'm at the end of part of the programme and I'm still nervous about what to expect at the project presentation, however my skills development coach is giving me great support and has scheduled more calls with me.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • RBS is really good at supporting it's own employees with their development, personal and professional. I get study leave and any additional time I might need. My manager is really involved in my programme, he reads the Missions and gives me feedback when requested. He also participated to the calls I have with my skills coach.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My skills development coach is really competent and has guided me from the beginning in every step of the programme. When I have an issue, I email her and she comes back to me within 24 hours, which is great when I'm a bit nervous about something I know I can count on her quick response. I had to postpone a deadline due to the workload, she was really understanding and supported me getting to the end of the mission.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the programme is well structured, although I'm not sure that what I'm studying is relevant to banking and in particular to the job I'm doing. I think it's a good qualification to have on my CV and demonstrate I can work and study at the same time, so in the future will be helpful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am the charity representative for my team and part of the charity building ambassador team. I have the opportunity to deal with different charities and organise volunteering events and fundraising. I'm a committee member of the leader Network for young bankers, I organise networking events and career spotlights with executive members of the business. My team is based in Birmingham, however we also have the opportunity to go to London for our Department meeting events. I've volunteered to mentor a student for her Duke of Edinburgh award, she will shadow me at work for 3 days and this will be her first work experience.

  • Yes

  • RBS is a big company with the right mindset of helping customers and make employees happy. There is the opportunity to grow professionally and personally. So many learning possibilities and is a great place to work if you have or would like a family as is really flexible and believes in the happiness and fulfilment of its employees.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • Be curious and don't stop asking questions. People here are happy to help, coach and support others as long as you're respectful and open-minded. This environment promotes diversity and you can be yourself. Network is a great way to get to know others, step out of your comfort zone, which is when you'll achieve your best.
