  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a team manager, I help develop and coach my team to be at their best at all times. I ensure they are performing well to the required KPIs. I am also concerned with their welfare and ensure they are happy at work and act to help in any way I can to make sure they do.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new team leader skills which have been somewhat useful on this placement but during other placements they have not been as relevant. The material is broad and quite specific, but the development days with Kaplan have really helped to bring this to life. I have enjoyed using the Training Logs to track my development.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme runs alongside the Graduate Programme. I enjoy the programme most of the time but sometimes it can be a little bit frustrating when the two aspects do not seem that aligned. I enjoy the Development Day aspect of the programme as it's good to bring the written material to life.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is relatively well structured although the apprenticeship is in Team Leader standard and I am only spending 1/4 of my Graduate Programme in a leadership role. I have therefore had to try and find other aspects in my different jobs which satisfy the team leader standards as well.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very supportive and gives me the time and resources to complete my apprenticeship to the best of my ability. They also provide extra training and development opportunities alongside the apprenticeship provider which helps to provide extra support. My employer is supportive if we have any questions or feedback to provide.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is very supportive, especially my Kaplan Talent Coach who provides very tailored and personalised assistance and support to me. The other parts of Kaplan are not as well organised and sometimes they give incorrect information or confusing instructions. They are supportive but sometimes confusing and working in silos.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Completing a Team Leader apprenticeship has been really helpful in my placement as a Team Manager. It has provided me with ideas, strategies, methods and techniques which I can use in my day to day role and I have really noticed a difference in the role after having the help from my apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are countless extra-curricular activities to get involved with at HSBC which include graduate-wide extra curricular and development events, sports teams and fixtures, socials and offsite away days and also charity events. There are also a real range of professional networking events and chances to meet people from other business areas across the business.

  • 9a. Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a multi-cultured, Global organisation which really cares about its people, both colleagues and customers. There are a real diverse range of people and we are all encouraged to embrace difference and bring our whole selves to work. We are working to make real improvements to our customer's lives which I enjoy.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
  • Get involved with all the different opportunities which will come your way and ensure you make the most of your time on the Graduate Programme to really get the most out of it. My other piece of advice would be to focus on networking and meeting as many of the great people who also work for HSBC.
