  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Started with a 2 month residential at Aston University where we learned the basics of Java, Sql and completed a project. This was worth 30 credits and it is tough but you get lots of support from teaching staff and peers. Currently I am on my first project as a Test Analyst which is very rewarding as you get really involved in real life business problems clients face. The role of a Test Analyst was ideal for me as it doesn't involve coding but making sure what developers have produced are bug free and contain are business requirements. In simple words, quality assurance. I take part in various meeting throughout the day and then get on doing my tasks. We mostly work in an agile method which is ideal for project delivery.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt the basics of java and sql at Aston University but I can grow this at work if I choose to. I have learnt to work with people of different personalities and getting along regardless of challenges. I have been introduced to working in an agile manner which I didn't know about before. I can consistently try to build my interpersonal skills when it comes to networking with people in my company via Twitter or in the office.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I highly enjoy my programme since I can see the implementation of my learning in real life. I enjoy having the responsibility of having to deliver work to my team so that we can get closer to delivering a quality product to the client. Previously attending university did not give me a set structure to life and it was really hard to stay motivated when you would attend a lecture and they would just read of the board. Where as on this programme I will gain a degree that is debt free and gain experience which is the most important.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured, it isn't possible to be perfect. However the GAP team put their at most effort in helping to deliver the first 2 month of the programme successfully. It is good to have so many apprentices in the company to speak to who have gone through what you are doing. We are supported well by our business area leads.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Quite a lot in terms of the different managers we have to employees on projects giving up their time to share their knowledge and experience. This also includes previous cohorts of apprentices who will always be happy to guide you. Integrate you really well when you join your first project and understand you also have other commitments as such as the degree so you ge time of before exams.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • During the 2 month residential we have the lectures teaching all day and they are more than happy to answer questions. They always encourage us to give them feedbacks if we want them to slow down or go over something again. They will reply to you emails and leave detailed feedback on coursework.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There is a lot of relevant information provided. The lecturer have work in the IT industry so they always like to bring that in the mix. Content learnt at University give you a good basic foundation to work up on at work if it is an area you are interested in. Even if it is something you would be doing at work directly, there will be other who will and you will need to have conversations with them so a little understanding goes a long way.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes various but it is up to you to get yourself engaged and to get your name out there. For instance when on projects, we will organise evening meals to get together. There is also ways of giving back which is supported and encouraged by Capgemini whether that going to help out with assessment days, recruitment events or going to schools.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Capgemini to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Capgemini do really invest in growing you as a person. They will allow you to leverage their experience and knowledge to excel. Capgemini has a great work culture which is very open and understanding and doesn't have a hierarchy when it comes to networking from colleagues who are very senior to colleagues who are new joiners.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Capgemini?
  • Do research on the Capgemini and see if you personality matches well with it. Go and watch videos of other apprentices talking about their experiences to give you motivation and a passion to want to work for Capgemini. Always be honest and mention your strengths and weakness that you have identified and want to work on as shows a good level of maturity. Do research on the programme and the the company but no so much that you sound like a robot reading out information in an interview. Try reach out to apprentices via twitter who will give you hints and tips. Show your commitment and good attitude to the programme but being proactive with the application process e.g chasing up the recruitment team if you haven't heard back in a while.
