  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the Markets division of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. This is a front-office role so I speak with clients daily. I prepare materials to discuss with clients and also complete business process so we can execute transactions for clients. The hours are quite long but I have never been required to work weekends.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Microsoft excel skills for analysing data and creating charts. Microsoft powerpoint for creating pitch materials for clients. My attention to detail has increased drastically as items shared with Clients have to be accurate, correctly and neatly presented. My telephony and presentation skills have also improved as I have never worked in a front-office role before

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the on the job learning the most. My team is very supportive of me and I am glad that I joined the team that i am in. I enjoy the job but find the hours a little long but there is a good wellbeing policy at RBS where this is made up for in other ways.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My on the job learning has been excellent. As one of the first degree level apprentices however I have had a bit of a bumpy journey in terms of organisation but this is not a reflection of RBSG / Natwest and they have made every effort to ensure that my programme is organised to suit my needs.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot. When my apprenticeship timetable has been muddled they have been very quick to sort this out and resolve for me. I am allowed to take 1 study day per week which I take from home. My team and manager are very supportive of me and my apprenticeship as they want me to be a successful example of an apprentice.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification is very useful to my role as my day job covers 2/10 topics included and I have also studied some of the other topics through other exams that RBSG has funded me through. The qualification is very difficult and stressful but my team are very supportive in giving me time to study towards the exam.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many employee led networks within RBSG which you can join (Womens Network, People with disabilities network ect) and there are also frequent networking / socialising events that are organised and fun to attend. It's not always drinks at a bar for example but ping pong, darts, escape room events have all been organised.

  • 9a. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • NatWest have been nothing but supportive of me and have funded me through many various exams and qualifications and they do care about your development through a personal development plan which is discussed at least monthly with your manager. The culture here is great and it is possible to speak to people all across the organisation and at different seniorities without being made to feel inferior for being an apprentice - in fact it isn't even a though that people have.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • Plan your answers for your interview in line with our standards, know the yes check and answer questions in a positive light but include what you thought could have gone better or what you would do differently next time. Know about the role you're applying for and what qualifications you will have to take.
