MB3 Apprentice Review

At South western Railway I'm am being trained as an engineering apprentice which deal with both mechanical and electrical systems and learn how to fix, maintain and fault find on them. All of these skills will be used on the maintenance of the trains at my current work place in Salisbury

Over the time I have learnt a lot of new skills coming from a background with no engineering background it has been a huge keep to learn all these new skills like the use of tools and doing different jobs to a very strick health and safety orientated industry like the Railway

I enjoy being around engineers who are helping me everyday and are always around to lend me a hand if needed. It's also great because I get round different areas and learn a lot about the company and how it works from all the way at the top down to the bottom which helps to see ways to improve

There on no plan on what we are supposed to be doing and how to get the grades we need or track our progress so this needs more focus in this area to Inprove it because it's hard to understand what you need to focus on and what your doing well in

I get a lot of support of my employer if I ever need anything to help me with course work or knowledge they will do their best to help me get what I need and are extremely flexible to sending my to events around the country to learn more and bring it back

I get a bit of help from NTAR but my college itself are not the most helpful and understanding when it comes to teaching the support is poor and they do not understand that I have other things to learn and pile loads of work on which causes more stress

The qualifications that I do get front this course and apprenticeship really does help when it comes to my job and it teaches me stuff that I do need to know and how I can use it in an actual job role because I do part time work and study

Their is going rail professionals who can be a social event but they are far away from me so apart from that there is much to do in the way to extra stuff and to get involved in other things with people with work but not in a working environment

They know there stuff and they do try to help but there is always room for improvement like sending students to colleges that have no idea about rail is not great and the facilities at NTAR are not used enough to teach the new era of students and get hands on experience
