My role involves going to premises installing or fixing customers lines ensuring the customer has a working telephone line and broadband, working on these lines consist of working outside inside up poles and under ground. My day to day work consists of driving between jobs and always giving great customer service and making sure they are in service.
when starting with openreach you are not trained in working in the under ground network as there is a lot more to understand compared to the over head work such as being trained with gas. I am currently going through my training this week and also have a broadband course lined up.
everything about this apprentice is enjoyable as they set up NVQ days for us to work on our NVQ's in groups, doing this means you get to catch up with people who you don't know but they are at the same point as you in the apprenticeship programme talking about different experiences
the programme is very structured and well organised, we can check our attendance calendar and everything is on there for when and where our days are going to be, we also get to go along to different off the job workshops to learn and upgrade any skills / new skills required for our role
the support received since joining Openreach has really been amazing, I can not fault it at all. when I first started I didn't realise how helpful everyone was going to be, in my head I thought other engineers would of thought oh another new start who doesn't know what they are doing but I was completely wrong!
during my first year I had a set assessor for all of my 10 NVQ days, he was always available on the phone if we were to get stuck or needed something explaining to us. we were also told about how the whole apprenticeship worked with set deadlines for when things had to be in.
i would say that the NVQ helps us a lot in our job role as when producing the documents it makes you think back over all your training we received at the start, it also helps people who aren't to clever on computers as our day to day role involves using computers
there as lots of different events in which we can go along to we receive invites every mouth to different events, i have so far only been to one and it was a fix it event that was being held to go and see some of the new equipment and technologies we are going to use in the near future.
Yes
i have already recommend Openreach to many friends and customers, the reason for this is I love my job and love getting up and going to work each day. Everyday is different and you get to see some amazing places and all different characters. also the training programme gets you a long way quick with excellent pay rises along the way.
I would say go for it and just be yourself, do your research on the company before coming for an interview and make sure you are able to work at heights, on your own and out and about in the great outdoors. You basically manage your own day so just enjoy it!
