  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My current job role is looking at in service products and improving the ease of manufacturing through re-designing components and systems within the mechanical section of engineering. Most of my daily interactions are with the electronics, interconnects and manufacturing functions of the business. However being an apprentice we change job roles every 3-6 months.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time at MBDA I have had various training to either introduce or improve skills that I use on a daily basis. The company have provided CAD (CREO), manual handling, ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) and Health and Safety training all of which I have been able to put into practice.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Not only do I enjoy my apprenticeship and learn new skills at work, I also enjoy studying for a HNC and HND in mechanical engineering as all the knowledge that I am gaining is all relevant to the job that I am doing day to day. Having flexi time for working hours also gives an excellent work-life balance.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the programme is excellent as I change job roles every 3-6 months meaning that I can do up to 4 placements per year and the placements are streamlined depending on which area of engineering you have chosen to apply for, either generalist, mechanical or electrical. Currently I am completing 2 days per week at college and these days remain on the same 2 days each week so that there is no confusion on where you're going to be each day.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is a lot of support from the company regarding, legal advice, financial advice and mental health advice all of which are free services provided by the company for the benefit of all employees. Line managers are usually more than happy to help or offer advice with different circumstances too.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As I am working towards a higher level of education there isn't as much support that is readily available from the training provider than there would be completing a level 3 qualification. However, this gives you more independence and if support is needed, it is expected you raise this yourself rather than getting a teacher or tutor to do this for you.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As I mentioned in a previous area, the things that I am learning about while completing my HNC and HND are very relevant to the job that I am doing on a daily basis. This means that I am able to apply what I have learnt in class to real world problems.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many different clubs and benefits about working at MBDA, some are free and some are paid. We have a gym on site, a climbing club, football and hockey teams. Not only are there sports clubs there are social ones available too. Being an apprentice there are also many different volunteering opportunities all across the country at careers and STEM events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend MBDA to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend, and have previously recommended MBDA to friends and family as it is a friendly place to work and has countless benefits that come with working here. Such as; company paid education and training, flexi hours, sports and social clubs and opportunities to travel within the UK and abroad, plus many more.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to MBDA?
  • Make sure that you have the correct grades/points that are stated on the MBDA careers website, make sure that you provide an up to date CV and I'd suggest adding a cover letter too. Generally when applying, don't cut any corners and fill out everything that you can to your best ability.
