My role is an electronics engineer this involves repair, maintenance and upkeep of the switch and transmission equipment, providing broadband and phone lines to customers and solving faults on equipment. also the role involves changing batteries and power supplies to units and compaction of all equipment and installing new units
I have learnt many new skills including using basic hand tools in a correct and safe manner. also I have learned how to work with electricity in a safe manor using the correct PPE and knowing what rules and policies to follow in order to complete the work to the highest standard.
I enjoy the program a lot due to the fun nature of the job. everyday you get a different task to work on which gives opportunities for new challenges and new learning experiences and I get to travel all over the north east to work so its something new all the time.
the programme is very well organised and structured, we are given a framework to complete which gives us the structure but we get to do it at our own pace and how we want to do it so it gives us the independence to work and set ourselves goals to complete our apprenticeship
there is a lot of support from our employer, if we are ever struggling with something then they can help us with programmes or allocate us buddies to go through whatever we are struggling with. there is always useful training guides and tools that can be used and help is always there when you need it.
I received lots of support from the training provider. he would set goals for us to achieve and If we started to struggle they would help us 1 to 1 so that we got through the tasks they would also stay behind and dedicate extra time for us to pass the course.
It helps me to perform better as it has given me a broad idea at the start of my apprenticeship to what BT was about and how the whole engineering side worked. it gave a detailed description of how the company has moved on through time using different technologies and hat its plans for the future are and how we would be involved in it.
I have not done any extracurricular activities at work yet however I do know that there are opportunities to apply for things like climbing the BT tower and seeing the BT sport studios. there is also opportunities to organise charity football matches and things like skydiving that BT would be happy to sponsor.
Yes
BT is a great company to work for with many opportunities to progress in your career it offers world class training opportunities where you can gain many qualifications to help you in the future. There is lots of support when needed and the job is different everyday offering new challenges.
the tips I would give are to research the company and make sure you know as much as possible. be enthusiastic and passionate about the job you will go into and look forward to challenges and problem solving on a new subject everyday. also be a good team player as you would be working in a team in BT
