  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a power planner is to plan and assist any job which is due to happen in any BT Telephone exchange. This includes meeting contractors on site and guiding them around and giving them information. It also includes doing CAD drawings and updating databases. It also includes practical activities.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, throughout my time as an apprentice in BT. I have developed numerous skills and traits. I have found that my confidence has improved a lot by meeting up with contractors and hosting Skype calls between the rest of my team. My team working and timekeeping has also improved a lot.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have been giving a lot of opportunity to develop my skills and attend training courses which help me to further develop. I also have received a lot of support from colleagues, managers and other apprentices. There is good workplace experience and all of my weeks are different. I really enjoy it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I attend Stoke on Trent College roughly once a month, where I am completing a BTEC Level 3 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. It is very well structured. I have the ability to plan and structure my own weeks so it is up to me to organise my own day to day working activities.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have a manager who is always available to contact if necessary. I also have an apprentice manager who I can contact if there is any issues. There are also multiple websites that BT have for employees where you can anonymously contact someone if you have any issues, and they will provide you with relevant support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My NVQ work helps me to develop my written and practical skills and also helps me to develop my ability to perform my job better. It also gives my manager and NVQ assessor an understanding of my progress. My college work ties in with my day to day work activities really well.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots. I am an attraction lead which allows me to attend local and national events. At these events I help to inspire young people to take up an apprenticeship in technology. I also regularly get emails through informing me of charity events and other events which I can attend.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Starting my career in BT has allowed me to develop, not only my skills but develop as a person. I have already made many great relationships and my day to day work activities always vary in a very challenging (but rewarding) work environment. I have the opportunity to do any training which will help me complete my job and the amount of benefits and rewards are really good.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • There are 4 stages in the BT interview process. Firstly an online assessment, I would recommend revising prior to taking part. Secondly an online application, I'd say stay direct and to the point and try and cram as much information and key words as possible into the answer. Thirdly a video interview, this was challenging, try to stay carm and retain eye contact as much as possible. Always show your enthusiasm for the job. Finally and assessment centre, this is all about how well you can conduct yourself throughout the day. Always ensure you are more than prepared before you attend.
