  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am initially training as a Hardware Break Fix Engineer which means my day to day role is maintaining Desktops & Laptops. Whether it be rebuilding operating systems or replacing faulty hardware, these are currently the machines I look after. I get jobs through on my work phone and travel to different sites in my company van. Further into my training I will move onto printers and servers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I came into this apprenticeship as a blank canvas. I had no background in engineering or computers so yes, I would say I have learned a huge amount of new skills. I have obtained accreditations from Dell, HP & Lenovo meaning I am qualified to maintain and repair laptops, desktops and tablets from these companies.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am thoroughly enjoying the program as it is satisfying my thirst for knowledge. The skills I have learned already are fantastic, however a mere drop in the ocean in comparison to what lies ahead of me. This is exiting as I have clear goals to work towards. I'm loving it!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is reasonably structured for the first 6 months however after that you kind of have to drive things yourself which I am a massive fan of however can see why that wouldn't benefit everyone. I guess it depends on who your manager & colleagues. I am fortunate in the sense of I have great support from the majority of my team.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is fantastic, he gives me the freedom to develop at my own pace but also the reassurance that if I need him for anything he is there. I'm also very fortunate to have a fantastic team of experienced engineers around me who I can lean on whenever I need a little extra support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We had 5 weeks with tutors from Stoke College who were extremely supportive throughout the BTEQ. I also have monthly meetings with my NVQ assessor who assists me in my work and sets me personal targets. I cannot really have any complaints with regards to the training provider as I found them very helpful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The BTEQ gave me a basic understanding of the history of the telephone network and some data skills which have certainly been a benefit to me in my role. The NVQ on the other hand seems a little less relevant to my job role. I would have perhaps expected to be completing tasks which would benefit me as an engineer.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have an excellent network of apprentices you can engage with and throughout the program you make friends with colleagues from all around the country. We are also given three paid days per annum to complete charity work which is very rewarding in addition to being helpful to the community.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • If you have a desire to learn, are driven and motivated then the opportunities within BT are endless. There are so many different areas of the business to go into, there really is a dream role for everyone if you are willing to work for it. Relatively good pay, working hours and easy going supportive senior staff, this is honestly the best company I have ever worked for and I have had half a dozen employers prior to BT.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Just be yourself. Don't worry about having mountains of previous experience, your attitude is the most important thing. BT will give you the skills you need if you are the right kind of person. I just made sure I was friendly, enthusiastic and showed a real desire to be part of BT's fantastic brand!
