  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves learning 3 different electronic disciplines - Switch, Transmission and Build. I spend my time working with different members of my team on a rotating 4 day week rota. On a day to day basis I can be based anywhere in my patch driving where my time is most useful for learning . These tasks always vary and you are constantly learning how equipment works and how to maintain it. I also spend downtime between tasks reading over notes and questioning my buddy for the day to build knowledge of the various systems.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how the various systems work within telephone exchanges on a basic level. I have only been with the company 8months so still have much to learn. I have gained an understanding of how fibre optic cabling works, how to diagnose basic faults and gain an understanding of the apprenticeship working dynamic, which is very different from any other place I have worked in the past.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme, the team I work with are fantastic and extremely helpful. I am currently attending college for a BTEC in Stoke on Trent and the staff there are also extremely patient and helpful. I would recommend this job to anyone with an interest in engineering and looking for a niche that will seriously set them up for life.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structure. I have an outline to complete each year that is clearly set out on attending the various events once you are employed. Through each year you attend various courses including the BTEC as mentioned previously which again lay out exactly what you need to do to pass. Any issues I have had have been cleared up very quickly between the apprentice programme management and my own manager, so there should never be any worries at the back of your mind.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive tons of support from my employer, any issues I have are resolved quickly. If I feel that I don't understand something fully, time is taken to help me gain an understanding of any subject. If you need time off in my experience it's never a problem.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive lots of support from my training provider working towards my qualification. We have regular meetings every 2months or so and regularly communicate via email and Skype. Anything I need to know I feel free to ask and answers are always sent in good time. The work I am tasked to do can be complex but again support is always there to ensure you get through it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the qualification I gain gives me an improved understanding of the role I will fit into. The coursework as said can be complex but after reading into it and taking time aside to understand what you are to do the topics aren't as difficult. Really the best advice I can give is if your stuck as for help and you will receive it.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At the start of the apprenticeship you go to Stone, Yarnfield Park which is the induction event for all apprentices starting at the same time as you. This is an opportunity to meet people feeling and thinking what you are and it gives you a huge boost looking towards your future within the company. At the event there's plenty to do afterwards meeting people and really just getting on with having a good time. After this event you go to Milton Keynes where you will sit a driving test for your van but its really just to ensure you know how to drive reasonably well and get signed off on it. At this event you learn in more detail about your apprenticeship and what's required of you throughout it. It's again great to meet new people especially like-minded that are going into the engineering field. After this you will be offered to do events that are local to your area.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a great company to work for, all the tools for you to succeed are there it really just goes that if you want to succeed with them then really put the time and work in to learn and you'll go a long way. You'll earn a wage that goes up each year and whatever you decide to do in your life will be possible with this company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Work hard, always ask questions, take time out to reflect on what you know and always keep in touch with the people you meet (they'll help you out along the way) Enjoy your time on the apprenticeship and feel proud if you manage to get a place with BT as it's a role that is hard to come by.
