  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work on the Power and Environment team, manning all the exchanges within the country, cooperating and liaising with engineers about tasks they're doing, carrying out databuilds and testing their alarm capabilities, building alarms in line with the changes in summer temperatures. I also take part in lots of volunteering opportunities throughout the company.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of computing skills which I wasn't very skilled at previously. I have also developed more confidence over the phones when talking to engineers as well as customers. This is essential for getting the correct and the key information across for quick, effective and successful conversations and completion of tasks.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy working at BT as it is a completely new experience for myself, one at which I never knew I would enjoy so much. The opportunities I get to do are unlimited and am supported via every decision I make, within the company as well as support with my university work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. We have apprentice coaches who push us all the way to get the best results for us possible as well as giving us support and acting as a mouthpiece to our universities. The rotations within BT are very well planned out and very indepth.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer. I get lots from my work colleagues on my platform for my day to day work, especially on new obstacles and I am challenged on my work so I can benefit from it. I am also well supported for university with my work and being given the opportunity to have study days to keep on top of my studies.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive plenty of support from my training provider whether it be my line manager through meetings and setting goals through to my apprentice coaches providing support with my studies, voicing my opinions to the university on my behalf and logging all my training so that it is correct and given opportunity to explore my options.

    8/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification and my work role go hand in hand with each other as studying about networking at university allows me to further understand the network that I work in at BT. It also allows me to understand computing further in that when others I struggling, I can shed my knowledge onto them to solve their issues.

    8/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in at BT. Currently there is a sports day at our work which is fun to be involved in as well as plenty of volunteering opportunities inside or outside of work with other partner schools to BT. There are plenty of sports facilities on site to use.

    9/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because BT is one of the biggest telecommunications companies in the world, with being paid a very competitive wage and the opportunity to explore all the realms of BT without any restrictions from employers is so relieving. You're treated like an actual employee and not just an apprentice which is very rewarding.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Just be yourself. Show that you are confident and have a willingness to put yourself forward for any and every opportunity available to you as progression within the company is much more likely to come your way. An interest in your job role is key but not essential as you're taught from the ground up.
