  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an openreach trainee engineer. My day to day role involves me delivering a service. I meet customers that is an asset of other service providers and fix/maintain the telecommunication network. I work on my own sometimes but I speak to the public a lot a they’re always curious of what’s inside these green cabinets in the streets of london

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I most definitely learnt new skills. When I joined openreach I had no knowledge or experience of how the network works and remains stable all around the globe. Now I am learning to maintain them and find faults within the telecommunication network. One existing skill I have developed is to organised at all times and work well on my own for a long period of time.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my work as you get to meet all kinds of people as well as work on your own. No day is the same really and you never know what to expect. The workload can be heavy at times but that’s why Openreach equip you with literally everything you need.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation is well organised and help is always around the corner. The company is very strict when it comes to health and safety. However one thing openreach can develop on is giving sometime to compete any oustanding NVQ work. I find the workload to be quite high and not there’s not enough time actually focus on your theory as there’s a lot to learn in the practical side of the engineering role.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive ALOT of help and support from my line managers Grant and Martin. They are only a phone call away and always try accomplish your request to help you during your training period. I think this way once your fully qualified you can be left on your own without any issues leading the company to be more successful as more jobs will be completed!

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • This is where I think the training provider needs to work on. I only received half a day introduction when I first started training for Openreach. I am aware there a lot to be done theoretically but I am not sure where to ask for help if I need it. I am more focused on the ‘job’ than completing my NVQ work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like all the work my NVQ provider gave us is all relevant to the job role I attain. When I had a look through the nvq questions it all relates to my overall qualification of being an telecommunication engineer. I think it’ll help me in the real world as while I complete my NVQ work it will stick into my head about better.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not that I am aware of. I think if I wore to contact my training provider there may be but is poorly advertised. I know if I wore to request extra curriculum activities to my manager they will be happy to meet my requests but regarding to my training provider; I have no idea.

  • I think it’s an awesome career to get into especially if you want to be successful without going through the stress of university. Really happy I found openreach and managed to secure and career with them!

  • Be confident. Never be hesitant to ask question. Be eager to learn as there is a lot to go through if you want to be successful. Enjoy interacting with service providers end user and not to be afraid of working alone for a long period of time. Not be scared of climbing a pole with a bunch of spiders!!
