  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Electrical and Instrumentation apprentice. Working with the network technicians to maintain company electrical and instrumentation assets. Attend training courses on gas safety, electrical installation, maintenance, testing. Install new electrical systems (such as lighting, earthing), test pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, batteries etc. Day to day role is varied and can be doing something different everyday

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes - learning with little to no previous experience electrical skills and instrumentation skills. Learning electrical installation techniques, electrical maintenance techniques, electrical inspection techniques. We then are learning the instrumentation discipline along with the electrical. During this apprenticeship we will become qualified in two different aspects within Cadent. We also learn how other aspects of gas distribution work

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Found the programme very enjoyable so far. Learning a wide range of new skills and feel as though I am being well trained. We also become officially qualified in electrical techniques, doing the 18th edition wiring regs for example, and the COMPEX course. Working with a great team who want to pass on their knowledge and skills

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Well organised programme schedule that is given to us in advance so we know the plans over one or two years. Accommodation and travel can be booked in advance through the company, or the company will book it for you. Courses may change or be added in at short notice where this cannot be helped

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Receive a lot of support from managers and colleagues. Managers and supervisors are understanding of any issues that may arise and are supportive if any concerns are raised. The company provides all the equipment needed for the job role. Trainers and colleagues are very supportive in providing training and passing on knowledge

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Receive good support from cadent trainers. Cadent facilities are well equipped to provide training sessions. College was ok, some tutors very supportive others not so much. When issues regarding college were raised with Cadent managers and supervisors they took the problems seriously and worked to resolve any problems that we had.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Courses are relevant to our job roles and will be useful in our future careers. Some courses are directly related and critical to our roles, some others provide an insight into roles within the company (which is useful to give us a wider understanding and knowledge of what cadent does in other areas).

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes - Cadent takes part in charity fundraising events and activities, and partners with charities. Newsletters are sent out informing employees of things that are going on within the company and how employees can get involved. Regular see updates on cadent employees getting involved with sporting events, bake off's, charity events etc

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that cadent offer an excellent training programme, and offer the opportunity to have a rewarding career. Work is interesting, challenging and everyday can be different. There are opportunities to further your career in different departments or within your own. Support and training is high quality, and work-life balance is good.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cadent Gas?
  • Be yourself and be honest in he application/interview process. The selection process, such as the assessment days seem very daunting at first but the actual day is carried out in a relaxed way, so try not to be too nervous as it's not as scary as it first seems!
