  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The job role can vary from depending on if you are site or office based. Office based work entails doing design work for mechanical and electrical systems, using the latest 3D CAD software to model systems and doing other engineering/management tasks. Site based works entails doing package management and on the spot engineering to overcome issues that arise.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time doing the job I have learnt a number of new skills these are: The use of 3D CAD software's Engineering principles People management skills Time management skills I have also been able to develop other skills through my study such as better revision and learning techniques.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been very enjoyable so far, this is due to the programme providing a number of different elements. I enjoy the work that I do day to day and have been able to learn on the job. I enjoy the study side of the programme also as I backing up what I learn on the job with my education. There are also a number of different learning modules provided throughout the programme to help further my career.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has a number of dedicated staff who work on keeping the programme structured and ensuring that we are kept well informed. The structure is well laid out and explained at the beginning and throughout the programme. The overall orginasation/structure has been very beneficial to keeping the programme running smoothly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very helpful and supportive of me for both my job and my studies. I have been allocated with a functional mentor who I have meetings with to ensure that I am getting the help and experience that is best for me. I also get study leave days to help with my studies.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There is a fair amount of help and support available from my training provider. They often provide a good level of resources to help with coursework and exam preparation. They are also very good at replying to emails and are always happy to help face to face either by pre planned meetings or drop in sessions.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification that I am gaining has been very helpful in improving my performance at work. The knowledge that I gain and learn from university has been very helpful in increasing my overall understanding of building services engineering, this helps me to better understand what I am doing during my day to day job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are often social gathering of teams when milestones are reached. There are also other business wide events such as Christmas parties. The business often also put on professional events to allow for networking between different areas of the business. Some of the sites or small teams also like to set up out of work social/sporting activates such as a 5 a side football league where possible.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • My overall experience during my time with Laing O'Rourke on my programme has been very enjoyable and I feel like I have been able to not only improve my career but also improve my own personal skills. For this reason I feel like they are a very good company to work for and therefore I would recommend it to a friend.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • When applying make sure to do your research on the company and make note of their projects, the way they work and how they are different and also look at the ways in which they are trying to be more innovative. Be sure to have all of this information to hand for the phone interview and brush up on it for the face to face interview.
