  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day to day activities include everything from progress monitoring and project management on site to tender planning.

    9/10

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • So many skills and experiences gained from the apprenticeship programme including advanced excel and numeracy skills, huge knowledge base of construction methods gained, health/safety & environment, commercial understanding, project management exposure and more.

    9/10

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Thoroughly enjoyed the programme, although it has been very challenging both in work and academically.

    9/10

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was very well organised from start to finish, regular modules and other activities keep you feeling involved. These were more frequent to begin with - when work and studies are less intense, then drop off as everything else picks up.

    9/10

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support is difficult to quantify, there is support to those that ask and seek it out. However most people grin and bear it in silence.

    6/10

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support was always there if needed from lecturers (or so I am told by others who needed it).

    8/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I do not feel that my qualification has helped me at this stage in my career, however final year modules on project management and business management may prove useful in years to come if I climb the ladder.

    6/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some however these are limited and usually organised at site team level so rarely extend beyond 5 a side or a big night of drinking.

    5/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend Laing O'Rourke to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The experience gained vastly outweighs the shortcomings of the scheme I have been on in my opinion.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • Do not underestimate the level of effort required to complete the degree apprenticeship scheme. The hours of work required during evenings and weekends will be worth it in the end but really won't feel like it when you're going through them year after year.
