  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I currently work Live Support, manage the APIs of a service we provide; monitoring the responses to ensure they are what we are expecting and identifying then fixing any issues that might arise. Alongside that, I work as a software developer. I am currently working on updating older pieces of code to conform to new specifications required.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've developed many new skills, both interpersonal as well as technical. Technical skills I have developed include learning several different programming languages such as SQL, Python, VBA. In addition, learning how to operate new OS, primarily Linux as that is the resource I use the most. I've developed less socially as I already possessed many of the skills that were encouraged and educated in the role, however understanding the implication of acting as a business individual has been useful.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • There are large parts of the program that I do not enjoy, primarily the work and several of the University modules, however this is not due to their own fault, but rather my own desires for what I want out of this apprenticeship. The computer history and component study is one module I don't really enjoy. I have however enjoyed considered part of a team and as a valued member of a team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation structure lacks in parts. The 20% requirement of study time is poorly structured and left entirely to the apprentices to 'find' time applicable. The study is entirely outside of work hours, leading to apprentices working full time in addition to their part time studies. The degree lacks competent educators in the first year, however I've seen a notable improvement in the second. Otherwise, I have no complaints.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Little when it comes to study time (See my previous remark regarding the 20% study time requirement). Apprentices are treated as employees first and foremost, but expected to exceed beyond their peers. Outside of the degree study itself, Capgemini is extremely helpful and accommodating of its employees, ensuring that your well-being and work-life balance is considered throughout your employment.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I cannot provide much insight on this topic. The university provides ample lecture material, tutorials, past-papers, quizzes and additional time that you can book with your tutors if you need additional help. However, the hours are rigid and often result in extremely long hours for apprentices, which makes attending all lectures difficult.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It provides an immediate, extreme benefit. I've been performing a great deal of Java programming in my role and the Java module has been invaluable throughout. In addition, the professional techniques taught have helped be develop as a better developer overall. Success in the degree directly correlates to success in the workplace.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Ample. Events are constantly being run through the Teams service, allowing employees to get involved with as many or as little (As little being my preference) activities with their colleagues as they desire. Aston provides many such opportunities as well, however due to proximity there has been little opportunity to use these.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Capgemini to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company itself is clear cut and well guided. It has roots throughout the world, stabilising an employees job security, while offering the opportunity to travel and work anywhere, for those with the desire to do so. The degree apprenticeship is an incredible opportunity, providing the much needed work experience alongside the degree that makes an employee competitive in a world where every potential applicant has a degree.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Capgemini?
  • Focus on your own uniqueness that makes you interesting and more 'full' as a person. They like to see life in their applicants. Additional outside work experience or interest is also useful as finding a passion in the potential applicant is a sure-fire way to elevate an applicants chance of success.
