  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • as an HR assistant/administrator i answer day to day queries from employees, write and issue contracts, carry out the new joiner process for all new employees, assist managers on projects (talent, audits, exit data analysis), assist with benefits (i helped to run the benefits fair), i assist both payroll and pension with any issues. i also draft and send out various letters (internal transfers, out of cycle salary increase, redeployment, garden leave...). i write and issue resignation acknowledgement letters and carry out exit interviews. i helps to carry out inductions, issue security passes, carry out screening and so on. my local HR team looks after all of this for UK, IE and US so i have a global outreach

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • yes, lots. i was thrown straight away into work which helped me to gain lots of experience. as my first ever job out of sixth form i had very little to no knowledge of HR practices, other than what i had learnt in A-level business studies. i am now writing numerous letters and contracts, carrying out exit interviews. i have gained so much general HR knowledge about benefits and day to day issues that may arise that will be great for my future advancement in HR. everyday i am also gaining further experience and skills by getting involved in PIP's and occupational health assessments.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • the work is great i have gained so many skills for the future and it has made me think of where i would like to be in the future. i have learnt so much useful skills that makes me enthusiastic about my role. the HR function as a whole is really friendly, however communication is severely lacking. my local HR team however does not have the best working dynamic, there are lots of strong personalities and these do not mesh well with each other, this can sometimes lead to conflict and unrest, which leads to me having a negative view of work

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • we had an our apprenticeship induction for the first day, while this was boring at times, this allowed us to set up all of our IT equipment and hear from some great speakers. for the next 3 months we had a lady come in to teach us about skills at work and how we should present ourselves within the workplace and online, this was very useful and a great learning experience, following on from this there is very little support like 1-2-1's and catch up meetings. despite this, i know for a fact that if i were ever to have an issue i could contact them, whether they could actually assist on the issue and make change happen is very unlikely. BPP was very unorganised at the start and i had very little clue on what was going on and when i had to submit things by, however this has improved as the course has advanced

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • colt as a whole is very supportive for young people to join the business and bring in new ideas, each year we have graduates and apprentices join which creates a a great social vibe. while my manager is supportive of me taking a study day, i am usually sent lots of emails some of which may have come from my manager which need to be completed, further disrupting my studying. more recently i have been placing myself onto 'do not disturb' which has helped significantly. since joining here 9 months ago i have only had one 1-2-1. the early careers team are always positive and are happy to help. as i work in the local HR team, if i were ever to have an issue i would not know who to speak to as i would not feel uncomfortable speaking to them, especially if the issue in fact lies with them.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • BPP were not very supportive at the start of the programme and there was very little guidance, however since the course has advanced and we have got into the flow of things, this has improved significantly. my BPP Advisor is always supportive and happy to help. the majority of my tutors have really constructive and helpful webinars where they guide us through the assessment

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • as of yet is do not feel as though this course has improved my skills, so far all i have done is create some reports and analyse data, all of which i have achieved back in GCSE and A-Level business studies. a lot of the skills you learn in business studies is very relevant to HR so i feel as though i am relearning previous knowledge and am turning this into lengthy reports

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • at work we have Network 25 this is exclusively for women, this hosts great networking events where prominent female speakers will come in and discuss how they got to where they are today and how we can do the same, this is very inspirational and allows us women to feel inclusive within the male dominated technology firms/market. we also have great summer and christmas parties for all employees. while sales and other functions have lots of team events and evenings, HR has none this

  • 9a. Would you recommend Colt Technologies to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • this is a great company to start your career at, there are lots of opportunities for personal development; however, this development has a limit. as a company with around 50 graduates and apprentices, this makes work have a great social environment where we can go out for lunch and out for evenings which is key for young people. i have also learnt so many valuable skills here which will set me up for another HR role in the future which is extremely valuable for an apprenticeship

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Colt Technologies?
  • dont be afraid to put yourself out there and ask for more responsibility and to get involved in more work or projects; your personal development is in your hands and it is up to you how you utilise the opportunities around you. i would advise that you try everything out and see what suits you. the skills you learn here will last you a lifetime and the people you meet here will also have the ability to impact your future so act wisely and utilise all of the opportunities around you including networking!
