  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role here at JN Bentley as a mechanical and electrical engineer involves checking and maintaining equipment in order to keep the site running and reducing downtime. My role requires me to coordinate with other engineers in order to plan ahead with future projects and installations while focusing on safety.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My electrical knowledge and skills have improved greatly since starting this apprenticeship as I have been given many opportunities to develop these skills due to the nature of work on site. My communication skills have also improved as it is important in my role to be constantly communicating with other engineers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed this apprenticeship as I have learnt a lot of new skills and I enjoy the type of work I am doing due to my interests in engineering. I find work exciting as every day is different and I am gaining a lot of experience by working across different sites.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has been very well organised with having a monthly block release to attend college. It has also been well organised as I have been given a mentor to work alongside who is teaching me new things about my role and I am given performance reviews regularly by my manager.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a lot of support off my employer as they have provided me with health and safety training and organised for me to gain a CSCS card proving I am competent with health and safety and they have also given me training in clean water treatment so that I am competent to work with clean water.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support off my training provider which is Cardiff and Vale college as they have shown me everything I need to do to gain my qualification and are happy to help with any questions regarding my work. They have even come up to see me in work to track my progress and always give constructive feedback.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Gaining qualifications such as my NVQ level 2 and 3 in mechanical and electrical engineering will help me perform better in my role at work as I can learn things in college which are applicable to my role at work. The more I learn at college the better I perform in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Since I have started in my role there have been numerous opportunities to get involved in social activities such as an organised trip to go go karking, there are sports teams within the company and I have had opportunities to go to professional networking events such as a water equipment event.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I believe JN Bentley is a good place to work as they are giving me a chance to work in a job that interests and excites me as well as investing in my future to allow me to gain qualifications such as NVQ level 2 and 3 which are beneficial to me and the company.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • My advice to others applying would be make the most of the opportunity by working hard if the applicants are successful. For people applying to JN Bentley I would say that it is important for the person is passionate about the type of work and to be ready for the fast paced environment.
