  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Going to site early morning and carrying out engineering jobs, this will include helping the site manager with their work and ordering materials etc. Sometimes when needed you will be surveying the works carried out as well as marking out the works that will be done by the operatives on site. You will need to check over work and see what works have been done and they must be done to a certain standard

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new skills to do with engineering such as using a dumpy level and total station etc. I feel as though I haven't been in a position to really expand my skills as I haven't been tested as much as I would have liked but have become more skilled in communication within the company.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme and learning new skills has always interested me because if eel as though it is always good to expand your knowledge. However in some instances I have found myself bored and not challenged by what I am carrying out which leads me to be disinterested. I also feel like I could have been pushed harder and the work that I am carrying out is slighty too easy for my standard.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel as though the start of my apprenticeship was very well organised with the meeting of tutors and being put through plenty of training courses, however towards the later stages this has broken down and we no longer get any contact from the employers really, this means that when unsure of something it is hard to find out that information.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We started with lots of support but as I stated in the pervious this has gone massively, we no longer really get contacted to find out about our progress we have been making and the only real help me receive for anything is from the site managers that we are working with not the employers themselves.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We received a reasonable amount of support however it was very disjointed as we had lots of tutors come and go without any really saying too long which made it hard for us as the works we carried out were not in a correct order and it became confusing. We didn't get given much information about any next steps either and once we had finished the first part of the apprenticeship we have not heard a thing.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like it has helped me in very few aspects, the work that we learned when working towards the NVQ level 3 apprenticeship would be suited to people with less skills as most of it was very straightforward and you could just use common sense to work out the answers. This is why I feel like it wasn't the most beneficial when doing the actual role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of activates which you can get involved in and these are broadcasted to all employees through the company e mails so you have plenty of options of what to do. I feel like as a young person working at the company it is still quite hard to get noticed because the networking events rarely happen

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend to a friend because it is a good company that you can most likely work your way up though. It has many different aspects that it works with which means you can work on your skills in the different utility industries eg gas, water etc. this helps when wanting to work up through your career and broaden your options.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • Make sure it is the thing you really want to do, do not rush into anything do the research and see if this will interest you. You have to be willing to work long hours and work outside in whatever the weather however the benefits of the company are massive perks for the works you will be carrying out
