  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an emergency gas engineer we attend gas escapes both internally and externally to stop these escapes and protect life and property. There is also work with installing and exchanging meters, and also assisting other companies with altering and installing installation pipework in residential and domestic buildings for our customers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learnt a lot of new skills as the skills needed for this job role are job specific; such as skills working with meters - how to install and exchange them. How to install pipework including pipe cutting and soldering. How to use tools such as gas detection equipment and how to use tools properly in general including hand held and power tools.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme greatly as it is very varied. Part of the programme is spent in training centres learning the skills needed and going through assessments; however the majority of the course is spent shadowing engineers who do the role already so this gives great experience along with great enjoyment as no day is the same and it shows us what the job is really like.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Our programme is very well structured and organized - we are sent a training plan well in advance so we know exactly what our next year looks like and the communication between both us and the course, and those running the course between us is excellent so we know exactly what topics and courses we are taking and when.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If any support is needed then those in charge of the course are always there. They are available whenever they are needed and develop an excellent working relationshio between themselves and those on the course; especially in the second year. The support from the management whom I will eventually be under has been slightly lacking but I hope this will change once qualified.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Excellent support - I cannot fault the training providers whom we have studied under. They have always been there for extra support if needed and the quality of the teaching has been in depth and personalized so that all those on the course can leave with a secure knowledge of the information taught.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • We wouldn't be able to perform the role if we didn't have the qualification. If we were engineers beforehand and had done this type of work then we could, but we are all novices coming into the course so need the training provided to become a gas engineer.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been involved in a few networking events and shows but if we want to get involved in anything like that we have to organize it within ourselves. I have not felt that this part has been looked at as it is very performance driven and the role itself is a solo working environment so the chance to get together is not really thought of by the company - only those whom work in the office.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Cadent Gas to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They have a good working environment, supportive training culture and the benefits offered by the company outweigh any other company I have worked for in the past. Although the shifts and hours that may be involved in my role are long or late, the benefits outweigh the negatives by far.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cadent Gas?
  • Be confident, organized, research the company before starting the application. Ensure that you want to work in a company where you want a hands on role and that the hours and working environment are never the same day to day. Work hard and be prepared for lots of learning as well as using tools!
